The beloved Legend of Zelda franchise may still reign under the Nintendo banner, but with demands higher than ever recently, especially following the success of Breath of the Wild and its Tears of the Kingdom sequel, Nintendo has reached out to second and third parties to get the assistance it needs. As such, companies such as Monolith Soft have been aiding The Legend of Zelda developer for the past few years, especially when it came to the development of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

So what does this mean for the future of the beloved franchise which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year?

Now thanks to a recent interview with Monolith Soft, we have gained more insight into its assistance with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as well as what this means for the next major adaptation in the beloved franchise. Released back in 2023, Tears of the Kingdom went on to sell over 10 million copies in just three days, and as such, an enhanced port for the Nintendo Switch 2 followed in June 2025. Since then, Nintendo has released spin-off, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, but it is Tears of the Kingdom which was the subject of Monolith Soft’s recent discussion.

In the interview, three developers who worked on the 2023 Zelda game revealed that they worked closely with Nintendo to determine the type of in-game models, and how they could best represent our favorite characters. As such, Ganondorf was designed to look strong, evil, and mysterious as well as alluring, with his design tweaked right up until the game’s launch. It was tidbits such as this that Monolith provided in the brand-new interview, but it was its closing statement that has perked up the most ears.

Moving forward, as a member of the team creating the world of “The Legend of Zelda” with Nintendo, we (Monolith Soft) will continue to develop games that pursue even more “new surprises and emotions.”

What Does The Future Hold For Zelda?

Not only does this reveal that Monolith Soft will continue working alongside Nintendo, but it also proves that plenty more The Legend of Zelda entries are in the pipeline. With the titles expected to feature “new surprises and emotions”, this could range from brand-new titles to remasters of some of our favorites. However, for now, we do not know what is next for the 40-year-old franchise. That being said, with Nintendo and studios such as Monolith Soft at the helm, it is no doubt that the next installment will feature the same magic as the recent Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
