The Objective Greatest Anime Of All Time’s Official Heir Just Got A Disappointing Crunchyroll Update

[

Hiromu Arakawa’s name still carries enormous weight in anime circles, largely because Fullmetal Alchemist remains one of the medium’s most widely praised achievements. Whether fans prefer the 2003 adaptation or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Arakawa’s reputation for sharp plotting and emotional precision has made every major follow-up project feel like an event.

That is exactly why Daemons of the Shadow Realm arrived with unusually high expectations. Marketed as the next major anime tied to Arakawa’s legacy, the series already had built-in prestige before its first dubbed episodes even landed. Unfortunately, its latest update from Crunchyroll’s official X account is not the kind of news viewers were hoping to hear.

Crunchyroll’s Dub Delay Is A Frustrating Early Setback

Crunchyroll confirmed that the next English dub episode of Daemons of the Shadow Realm has been delayed due to production issues. Instead of continuing on its expected schedule, the next dubbed installment is now set to arrive on May 16. After that, the platform says weekly releases are expected to resume as normal.

On paper, a one-week delay may not sound disastrous. In practice, though, it is a disappointing interruption for a series that was already trying to build momentum with English-speaking audiences. SimulDub consistency matters, especially for a new title still fighting to establish itself in one of anime’s most competitive streaming environments with amazing series like Witch Hat Atelier stealing the spotlight.

Dub scheduling has become one of the clearest ways modern anime platforms maintain weekly engagement. When a release slips, even briefly, it can disrupt audience habits and reduce short-term conversation around a show. For a new adaptation carrying expectations this high, losing even one week of momentum is not ideal.

The pressure on Daemons of the Shadow Realm was always going to be unusually intense because of who created it. Hiromu Arakawa is not simply another respected manga author. She is the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, a title still regularly cited among the greatest anime and manga series ever made more than two decades later.

That connection has made Daemons of the Shadow Realm feel less like a standard seasonal release and more like the spiritual successor to one of anime’s most decorated franchises. Any project linked to Arakawa inevitably invites comparison to Fullmetal Alchemist, particularly when fans are still searching for a modern series with similar narrative weight.

That is what makes this Crunchyroll delay sting more than usual. Daemons of the Shadow Realm is not just another catalog addition delayed by a production bottleneck. It is a prestige title attached to one of anime’s most trusted creators, and even a minor scheduling stumble feels larger when the expectations are this high.

A Small Delay, But A Noticeable Blow To Momentum

To Crunchyroll’s credit, the company did provide a concrete return date rather than an indefinite postponement. That matters. A confirmed May 16 return, followed by weekly episodes, is far better than the open-ended delays that have hurt other simulcast dubs in recent years and left audiences uncertain for weeks.

Japan Has Officially Chosen Spring 2026’s Best Anime

Spring 2026 just started, but one anime is currently dominating Japan on both streaming platforms and manga sales.

Still, this is a disappointing early optics problem for a series that should be building a steady following. Daemons of the Shadow Realm is one of the more intriguing new anime tied to a major creator, but prestige alone does not protect a show from losing momentum when release consistency is messed up.

The delay is temporary, and the long-term damage may be minor if the rollout stabilizes immediately after May 16. Even so, for a series positioned as the closest official heir to Fullmetal Alchemist’s legacy, this was an unfortunate moment for Daemons of the Shadow Realm to have a big delay.
