A lesser-known threat that’s been making problems for Spider-Man on an occasional basis since the early 1970s may be the answer to what’s really going on in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Despite all the characters confirmed for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there’s still no definitive explanation as to who will be the main villain.
A few things about the plot are made apparent by the trailer: Spider-Man’s DNA is mutating, Peter Parker is facing a hidden danger no one can see, and mind control or some other form of telepathy will be a factor. Multiple theories postulate that Jean Grey (who may be Sadie Sink’s character) is involved, but whether or not that’s true remains to be seen.
Even if that’s the case, that wouldn’t be the complete picture, as Jean Grey is unlikely to be the main antagonist. Tombstone and Scorpion may not be responsible either, as neither of their comic book counterparts are capable of the sort of mind control shenanigans that Brand New Day seems to be teasing.
However, there are characters in Marvel Comics with backgrounds that would justify such a role, one of which is Dr. Jonas Harrow.
Dr. Jonas Harrow In Marvel Comics Explained
Dr. Jonas Harrow made his first appearance in 1972’s The Amazing Spider-Man #114 as a part of the backstory of Hammerhead. After being shot down in a bout of gang warfare, Hammerhead was saved by a scientist who surgically inserted titanium into his head, thus transforming him into a super-powered threat.
Hammerhead went on to become a thorn in Spider-Man’s side, as did other characters who crossed paths with Dr. Harrow. The Amazing Spider-Man #126 introduced another new foe for Spidey’s rogues’ gallery in Kangaroo, whose kicking powers are also owed to the intervention of Dr. Harrow.
Dr. Harrow appears again in The Amazing Spider-Man #167, having latched himself onto a new super-powered individual known as Will ‘O The Wisp. Because of a cybernetic implant put into him by Dr. Harrow, Will ‘O The Wisp becomes a misunderstood villain, doing the bidding of Dr. Harrow with even Spider-Man temporarily in the dark about his real motives.
But in none of these three stories did Spider-Man actually meet the person who was really behind their respective villains. It took until 1980, but Spider-Man did finally come face-to-face with Dr. Harrow in The Amazing Spider-Man #206, where Harrow uses a machine to influence people’s emotions.
This put an end to Dr. Harrow’s eight-year history of being a behind-the-scenes villain, allowing the character to finally come out into the open. However, this was not the end of his criminal activities, as he continued to use his scientific expertise to make trouble for Spider-Man. In later comics, Dr. Harrow built an army of underlings he could control via his cybernetic implants and dispose of when he saw fit.
Why Dr. Jonas Harrow Makes Sense For Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Story
Looking at what’s been established about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, a connection between its story and Dr. Jonas Harrow certainly does seem feasible. Tramel Tillman’s character says in the trailer, “we are faced with a danger we cannot control, one we can’t even see.” That description aligns perfectly with Dr. Harrow’s role in Spider-Man’s classic comics.
An unseen force can be seen taking control of police officers in the footage. The prevailing theory is that Jean Grey is behind this, but Dr. Harrow’s track record of using technology to manipulate people’s actions from a safe distance shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s possible that an MCU incarnation of Dr. Harrow is operating somewhere in New York City, unbeknownst to Spider-Man.
Dr. Harrow could also have a link to the large assortment of Spider-Man villains appearing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Like his comic book counterpart, Dr. Harrow could turn out to have a hand in some of their origin stories, which would connect all of these battles together, and in turn make the scientist responsible for a host of the challenges Peter has been dealing with.
There’s also the matter of Spider-Man’s DNA mutations. Granted, this dilemma could be unrelated to the mysterious danger hinted at in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer, but when considering all the times Dr. Harrow has created a villain with science, it could be that he’s involved in this as well.
