Every month, titles come and go from Netflix. In just the first week of April, countless new TV shows and movies landed in the streaming giant’s catalog, like the long-awaited fourth season of Love on the Spectrum, the rom-com classic Along Came Polly, and the third season of XO, Kitty, just to name a few. And while some of these are Netflix originals destined to become streaming hits, some new arrivals on Netflix have remained under the radar and reach a whole new batch of fans when they land on the platform.
That’s certainly the case for Black Monday, a three-season dark comedy series that first aired in 2019 on Showtime. The series reached an end in 2021, but, despite the star-studded cast composed of Don Cheadle, Regina Hall and Andrew Rannells, it never got the love it deserved. Now that it’s headed to Netflix this month, however, that’s all about to change.
What Is ‘Black Monday’ About?
Set in the wild, excessive world of Wall Street in the late 1980s, the series leads up to the real-life Black Monday, the name given to the sudden global stock market crash that happened on October 19, 1987. The series’ cold open is on the day of the crash, as a body literally crashes into a Lamborghini limousine after leaping from the tower in desperation. Without identifying who the victim is, the series then flashes back and follows the lives of some of the culprits for the crash. Among them are Maurice “Mo” Monroe (Cheadle), a flashy, ruthless trader who runs a scrappy trading firm, Dawn (Hall), Mo’s ambitious partner and longtime collaborator, and Blair Pfaff (Rannells), Mo’s newest employee and naive newcomer to the industry.
Throughout the series, Mo and Dawn’s company has a sure-fire goal in mind: to bring together their band of outsiders and misfits and break into (and take over) the old-boys’ club of high finance. Along the way, they’re not afraid to become corrupt themselves, hustling their way into power, making shady deals left and right, and manipulating even the most powerful Wall Street elites. As they do so, the series shows how their desire for success, money, revenge and even change can distort people’s motivations and eventually spiral out of control.
‘Black Monday’ Is Coming to Netflix
Black Monday, created by Jordan Cahan and David Caspe, and executive produced by comedy heavyweights Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, is on its way to Netflix. According to What’s On Netflix, all three seasons of the show will be on Netflix US starting April 13, 2026. And if the synopsis alone hasn’t convinced you to watch, the series has been declared a hidden gem with audiences over the years, scoring an average 79% between all three seasons. “I think this is about as great as a show can get,” wrote one reviewer. “It’s FUNNY, it’s super original, it’s smart, it’s cheeky, it’s DIVERSE, the set design is amazing and it’s easy to watch.”
Now Is the Time To Binge Don Cheadle’s Forgotten 5-Season Drama Before It Leaves Netflix
Step 1. Smile. Step 2. Steal their money.
From the critics, while Season 1 received mixed reviews, Season 2, which follows the aftermath of the crash, scored much higher with an 84%. “There’s a lot to like about this fresh and funny series, so if you’re looking for quality escapism with rapid-fire wit, I can’t think of a better binge,” wrote one Season 2 review. “Black Monday just lets its people move through its wild world in relatively sensible ways – paying back those who burned them and scheming to get more power, money, and ass,” another review wrote. “Bottom line: it’s a lot of fun.”
With that said, while most audiences might not have heard of Black Monday until now, the series landing on Netflix could give it a whole new wave of fans. With incredible set design and costumes placing viewers into the ’80s, and a storyline that’s fast-paced, unexpected and dynamic, the series has everything to become a streaming hit.
