Tim Robbins and Sissy Spacek have joined Emma Stone and Chris Pine in The Catch, a romantic comedy from Universal Pictures.
The two Academy Award winners add some luster to the call sheet, which already includes Saturday Night Live breakout Ashley Padilla and comedian Druski, on top of Stone and Pine.
Dave McCary, who acted as a segment director on SNL in the 2010s and is married to Stone, is helming the feature, which begins shooting in July in New York.
While many of the plot details are being kept in the catcher’s mitt, sources say the rom-com is described as Bull Durham meets Notting Hill with Stone playing the most hated woman in baseball. Pine is also playing a baseball player.
Robbins will play Stone’s father while Spacek will be playing an aunt.
Jen Statsky and Travis Helwig wrote the most recent draft of the script. Patrick Kang and Michael Levin wrote the original spec script.
Universal has set a May 21, 2027 release date for the rom-com.
For Robbins, the comedy is a return to the mound, somewhat, as the actor hit breakout status with his work in Bull Durham, the 1988 baseball movie considered one of the best sports movies in the field. The actor has been spending time in TV land of late, appearing in AppleTV’s Silo and before that, Hulu’s Castle Rock. The last feature he did was Todd Haynes’ 2019 conspiracy thriller Dark Waters.
Spacek appeared with Jennifer Lawrence in last year’s Die My Love as well as opposite Michelle Williams in Hulu limited series Dying for Sex.
Robbins is repped by CAA and Anonymous Content while Spacek is repped by UTA, MGMT Entertainment, Rowan & Maron and Fat Dot.
