Say what you will about Russell Crowe‘s recent output, but you can’t deny that he is having fun. Crowe has been having a ball in recent years doing B-movies about exorcists, road-raging stalkers, and boastful Nazis. Not too many of them have received positive reviews; even fewer have done well at the box office. But an MMA drama and a Soviet-era spy thriller featuring Crowe are around the corner. During these last few years, Crowe also played an amnesiac detective in a movie that grossed only $2 million at the box office and received so-so reviews. The movie is currently streaming in the United States on Paramount+, but if you haven’t seen it yet, you might want to hurry as it’ll leave the platform soon.
The film in question was released in 2024, between fellow Crowe vehicles Land of Bad and The Exorcism — the latter film is not to be confused with The Pope’s Exorcist. Directed by Adam Cooper, the crime thriller also featured Karen Gillan and Marton Csokas in supporting roles. The movie was based on a 2017 novel and was filmed in Australia. It holds a 43% critics’ score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t particularly terrible, considering how poorly some of Crowe’s other recent movies have done. For instance, Poker Face, which he also directed, holds a 9% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while The Mummy (2017) and Kraven the Hunter both hold 15% scores.

The movie we’re talking about, however, is Sleeping Dogs. It has a rather encouraging 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a consensus that reads, “Forgetting to give Russell Crowe a compelling mystery to solve, Sleeping Dogs lies down rather than stands on its own.” Crowe most recently starred in the World War II-era legal drama Nuremberg, in which he played the Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring. Produced on a reported budget of around $10 million, Nuremberg grossed nearly $50 million at the box office and emerged as a bona fide home-video hit thanks to a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
