Toad & Peach Spinoff Potential After Super Mario Galaxy Movie Addressed By Keegan Michael-Key

[

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie characters, Toad and Peach, could be soaring into a new spinoff.

Super Mario Galaxy is the latest installation in the Super Mario universe, and currently, it’s the highest-grossing film of 2026. It’s the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster, and with a stark divide among critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, the next installment has already been confirmed to arrive sometime around 2029.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s digital release, when asked about a Donkey Kong spinoff and a Toad spinoff specifically, Keegan-Michael Key (who voices Toad) said that he’s not sure and doesn’t have details yet. He said that he would be excited about the possibility of doing one, and that there’s “still a lot [more to do].”

Check out Key’s full comments below:

I don’t know yet. I would love that. I would love for there to be a Toad-specific project. That would be amazing. I don’t know if I can speak to the Donkey Kong of it. I’m not sure exactly what all that is, but I would be thrilled to do it because I think there’s still a lot [more to do]. Of course, there’s lots of untapped history in regard to this universe that we could explore. And Princess Peach, which is one of the linchpin characters, I would love to see her upbringing and how she grew up in the Mushroom Kingdom, and how the Mushroom people in the koopas had that eternal battle that’s happened between these denizens of this universe. I think it would be great.

There’s a lot of movement in the Super Mario world, specifically surrounding which characters could get a spinoff next, but Key’s comments suggest that those movements are still up in the air. Donkey Kong has been rumored to be next, but with the introduction of new characters, there isn’t a definitive next step in place.

Regarding Key’s comments, Toad is a foundational character in the Mario universe. He is Princess Peach’s most loyal attendant, Mario’s longtime buddy, and the basis for many characters. Fans have seen an entire range of different Toads, from Toadsworth to Toadette to Captain Toad to the Toad Brigade.

Given The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s overall success, it wouldn’t be farfetched to imagine multiple spinoffs, and as Key said, “there’s lots of untapped history in regard to this universe that we could explore.” Toad overlaps heavily with other characters, too, and Key’s comments about exploring Princess Peach’s past as well as the koopas could make for a great addition.

Key is one of today’s premier comedic actors, and he has turned Toad into a well-rounded, truly lovable character. Although in the past, Toad could be regarded as high-pitched and possibly off-putting, he described his process to IGN, saying, “What I had to do is just literally use my imagination and tell myself, all right, I am sucking on a helium balloon and that is how I’m going to impersonate what I thought I would sound like if I was on helium.”

Key’s comedy background is second to none. He performed at Second City and was a cast member on Mad TV. He co-created Key & Peele, and his voice-over resume includes The Lion King (2019), Migration, Transformers One, and Toy Story 4, among many others. He’s also been on Broadway in Steve Martin’s comedy Meteor Shower in 2017, as well as his hilarious performance in the Off-Broadway Hamlet production at the Public Theater where he played Horatio alongside Oscar Isaac.

With The Legend of Zelda release set for April 30th, 2027, and a Donkey Kong spinoff reportedly in the works, Nintendo is flying towards more and more films. With characters as prevalent as Toad and Peach, and with a lot of worlds to explore, the universe is wide open for many more possible spinoffs.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is currently available to stream on video-on-demand platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango At Home. It’s set to stream on Peacock later this summer.
