Prime Video may have wrapped up their original Jack Ryan series after four parts, but let’s be honest, Tom Clancy’s most famous CIA analyst was never going to spend the rest of his days sitting behind a desk. This is a character who has survived multiple actors, several big-screen reboots, and four decades of the world changing around him — and he still just keeps going, so obviously, we were waiting for him to return.
That return has now arrived in the form of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, and it’s Prime Video’s latest global streaming success. The feature-length follow-up to the hit series remained inside the streamer’s United States Top 10 for more than seven weeks, including a seventh-place finish on the movie chart in mid-July. Proof, if ever, that people didn’t want to say goodbye.

Was ‘Ghost War’ a Success for Prime Video?
However, the cast didn’t prove enough to impress critics, who slaughtered the film and awarded it just 41% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. “Ghost War wants to feel like a bigger, sharper return for the franchise, but it too often settles for the safest version of itself,” wrote Tania Hussain for Collider. Hussain said that the movie had an ideal cast and just the right amount of slick action to make it perfectly watchable, but that there wasn’t enough to justify a whole movie. Ghost Warnever feels as sharp or substantial as it should. In the end, it comes off more like a decent TV movie than a genuinely exciting next chapter.
And unlike previous Jack Ryan adventures starring Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War was produced exclusively for Prime Video, so there’s no way of knowing how successful it would have been in a traditional box office setting. But since Prime Video measures success on views and hours streamed, it’s a safe bet that they’re thrilled with this one, too.
