Tom Holland Teases Mystery Spider-Man: Brand New Day Villain Plotline

[

Tom Holland has said he’s still shooting Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is due out in just a few months, to add “the icing on the cake in certain areas.”

In a new interview with GQ, the Marvel star revealed that Marvel is adding more humor and is even “layering in” a villain plotline “in a new way.

Here’s the quote in full:

“I can positively say that the stuff we’re doing, we don’t need. The movie works and sings as it is. We’re just adding the icing on the cake in certain areas. We’re finding some ways to add a little bit more humor. We’re layering in a villain plotline in a new way and some really fun stuff.”

The addition of more humor is straightforward to understand (perhaps a movie with the super serious and normally brutally violent Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, needs more than a few laughs to compensate). But what is this “villain plotline,” and how is it being layered in “in a new way”?

Assuming Holland is talking about adding an unannounced villain into the mix, who could it be? Despite the fact Spider-Man: Brand New Day is out soon, there’s still a lot we don’t know about it. We know Sadie Sink, of Stranger Things fame, is in the movie, but we don’t know which character she plays. We know Michael Mando plays Scorpion, so presumably he’s not who Holland is talking about here. Could Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, confirmed to be in Brand New Day, get a surprise Hulk-adjacent villain to battle? Or maybe Marvel and Sony got their s**t together and sorted the rights out so that Daredevil’s Kingpin can finally fight Spider-Man, as Vincent D’Onofrio has called for.

Or maybe this new villain plotline has to do with the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe story, and what we’ll see ties into the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, or maybe even sets up something further down the line.

Last month, we reported on how fans were convinced that the recent Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer had been edited to digitally remove several hidden characters from a specific scene. Clearly, there’s a lot going on in this movie, and there’s much for fans to discover.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day launches in theaters on July 31, while Avengers: Doomsday will follow on December 18. Not long now.
