Tomb Raider Fans Rally Behind Official Lara Croft Redesign

[

Tomb Raider‘s Lara Croft has been one of the most iconic gaming mascots for decades, but she’s looked very different at various points throughout her history. While the basic ideas of her original low-poly model remain in place, Lara Croft’s more recent iterations are a lot less pointy and a lot more human-looking.

Fans have had well over a decade to get used to the redesign introduced in 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot, which evolved in the sequels Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Now, she’s gotten another major overhaul thanks to her appearance in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis later this year (or next, if delay rumors are be to believed), and this one keeps generating positive reactions from fans.

Tomb Raider Fans Love Lara’s New Look

Reddit user Funny-Roof7746 shared a new comparison of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis‘s Lara Croft and her appearance in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, putting the new Lara on the left, old Lara on the right, and a custom edit merging some of their features in the middle.

For a lot of fans, the comparison seems to highlight the strengths of the new design. Reddit user AriAriArrivederci deems it their favorite of the three examples, declaring that the Legacy of Atlantis team “nailed the design.” Cagesdeservemusic agrees, calling the Legacy of Atlantis look “absolutely stunning.”

Of course, universal consensus on anything is a pipe dream, and the design still has a few critics. CastleDehaus, for example, considers it “too cartoonish,” favoring the slightly more realistic look of the Shadow of the Tomb Raider iteration. On the whole, though, most comments lean toward praise for the Legacy of Atlantis version or a celebration of all three.

Tomb Raider’s Future Looks Strong

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to be a fresh remake of the original Tomb Raider, which previously returned in the form of Tomb Raider: Anniversary and in Tomb Raider I-III Remastered. We haven’t seen enough of the game yet to have a rock-solid idea of how it will play, but the fan reception for Lara Croft’s redesign suggests, if nothing else, that the team has a solid grasp on what the community goes for.

Aside from Legacy of Atlantis, Lara Croft will also return in the new game Tomb Raider: Catalyst and an Amazon Prime series. Basically, it’s never been a better time to be a Tomb Raider fan, as long as all the projects currently in development are able to fulfill their inherent potential.
