Transformers G1 Officially Returns In New Series That Promises Optimus And Megatron’s True Final Battle

In celebration of the franchise’s 40th anniversary, Transformers is officially returning to its golden age as the franchise prepares to launch a new Generation 1-set series that will revisit the most legendary final battle between Optimus Prime and Megatron.

There is nothing that makes longtime Transformers fans more nostalgic than G1 continuity, as this was the version of the franchise that established nearly everything people associate with Transformers today. Even more impressive is how this era remains one of the most recognizable and commercially successful versions of the franchise, despite the dozens of reboots Transformers has undergone over the years.

What fans typically refer to as G1 encompasses the original Marvel comics, the original Sunbow cartoon (1984–1987), and The Transformers: The Movie (1986), the animated film that served as a bridge between Seasons 2 and 3 of The Transformers cartoon. This particular G1 entry became one of the most important chapters in franchise history, introducing several major developments that would go on to define Transformers for decades to come.

Among the most notable developments were the death of Optimus Prime, the rise of Rodimus Prime, and the debut of Unicron. Now, this pivotal chapter of Transformers history is set to return as The Transformers: The Movie receives a brand-new 3-part series adaptation, taking fans on a nostalgia-fueled adventure.

Releasing on June 3, 2026, is the first issue of Image Comics’ The Transformers: The Movie 40th Anniversary Edition, a limited series spearheaded by writer Ralph Macchio and artists Don Perlin, Brian Garvey, Ian Akin, and Nel Yomtov. The debut issue will span 32 pages and be available for $3.99 at local comic shops and through digital platforms. Following the release of the first issue in June, issue #2 is scheduled to arrive on July 1, while the third and final issue will conclude the series on August 5.

As confirmed by the official synopsis, this upcoming limited series is part of the franchise’s ongoing 40th-anniversary celebration and will serve as an official comic adaptation of The Transformers: The Movie (1986). As such, the series will feature what is arguably one of the most iconic battles between Optimus Prime and Megatron in Transformers history.

While the issue #1 synopsis teases the legendary final battle between Optimus Prime and Megatron, issue #2 will focus on a new generation of Autobots as they continue Optimus Prime’s mission to unite Autobots and Decepticons in peace, while Galvatron and his new army of Decepticons attempt to stop them. The concluding issue will then shift its focus to Unicron as he arrives to destroy Cybertron and faces off against Hot Rod.

This return to G1 is particularly exciting because it represents the ultimate return to the franchise’s roots, bringing back the classic versions of Optimus Prime, Megatron, and the Autobots and Decepticons that fans grew up with. As a result, this adaptation will be more than just a return to an earlier continuity; it will also act as a tribute to the era that many fans still consider the heart of Transformers.
