Broadway‘s Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York), a British musical import that got terrific reviews but could always use some help in enticing ticket-buyers, has landed on a light-hearted, if not truly light-fingered, bit of coattail publicity-riding to boost its own visibility.
Taylor Swift probably won’t mind.
The musical by Jim Barne & Kit Buchan stars Sam Tutty and Christiani Pitts as an English man and an American woman, respectively, who meet for the first time at the stateside wedding of his dad to her sister. The musical takes its name from the duo’s one wedding responsibility: Pick up the very large and many-layered wedding cake in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and schlepp it to the ceremony in Midtown Manhattan. What could go wrong?
So last night, the production posted an Instagram message on its official account picturing Tutty, as his character Dougal Todd, toting two stacked boxes of cake, looking a bit guilty as he stands in front of Madison Square Garden.
See the IG post below.
The IG post reads: “Breaking News British man caught stealing part of Taylor Swift’s wedding cake. The man was identified as 25-year-old Dougal Todd from Basingstoke, UK. When asked for his motive, he answered, ‘the thing about wedding cakes is 42 layers is too many.’”
Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York) is currently playing at Broadway’s Longacre Theatre. A North American tour has been announced for a fall 2027 launch.
