Marvel has had a big year on both the large and small screen in 2026, especially with its latest live-action film. Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to shatter records at the box office with each passing day, and it’s expected to be one of the few movies in history to reach $2 billion. Marvel kicked off the year with Wonder Man, which earned an Emmy nomination for lead actor Yahya Abdul Mateen II. Marvel also released two other series this year, Daredevil: Born Again and X-Men ‘97, both of which have been renewed for new seasons, with each confirmed to premiere before the end of next year.
Marvel’s next big Disney+ show on the slate is VisionQuest, starring Paul Bettany. While it was believed that more shows were on the way after its conclusion, that is no longer the case. Collider has learned that, after VisionQuest, Marvel Studios will be cutting back on live-action Disney+ shows. This excludes returning series like Daredevil: Born Again, an existing series with another season that has already wrapped filming, as well as potential miniseries that may be developed under the “Marvel Presents” and “Marvel Spotlight” banners. Marvel continues to trust the steady hand of BradWinderbaum, who has long been the Head of Marvel Studios Streaming and Animation divisions, but was also recently promoted to further oversee Comics and Franchise development. A move that arrived in May, just before a clear shift began to manifest in Marvel’s future televised plans.
Last month at San Diego Comic-Con, Wonder Man was completely left out of Marvel’s heavy presence at the event the week before it was cancelled. In fact, Marvel CEO Kevin Feigedidn’t speak about the studio’s television presence at all during the presentation, which focused entirely on the MCU’s big-screen future with an emphasis on Avengers: Doomsday, alongside exciting announcements for Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3. Looking back, the lack of live-action TV announcements at SDCC is glaring, and it would be quite a pivot if there is no live-action series news at D23 this weekend beyond VisionQuest, considering the event has been a staple for Marvel show announcements in recent years.
Collider previously heard that Disney used shows like The Acolyte, Willow, and even Wonder Man as “grand experiments” to compete with other streamers like Netflix and HBO Max, but all three shows were canceled after only one season. Disney also has no new live-action series planned at Lucasfilm beyond the second season of Ahsoka. Lucasfilm’s attempt to spin a small-screen series like The Mandalorianinto a theatrical event failed, as The Mandalorian and Grogu eked out a mere $345 million worldwide. Elsewhere, Disney+ has halted development on a planned Power Rangers series which would have been helmed by Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ showrunner duo, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz. It remains to be seen if the Ryan Coogler-backed Animorphs reboot will be the next casualty of the streamer’s strategy pivot. Disney is reportedly prioritizing animation over live-action for their two tentpole franchises, where series can be fast-tracked on a much smaller budget.

What Movies Does Marvel Have Coming Out Soon?
After VisionQuest, which premieres on October 14, Marvel will return to the big screen for Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on December 18. The next Marvel movie will be the Doomsday follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, and Kevin Feige has already confirmed that there will not be another movie released between Doomsday and Secret Wars to allow the studio to focus on quality over quantity. Other Marvel movies confirmed to be in the works without release dates are Ghost Rider, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy, Marvel’s X-Men reboot, starring Samara Weaving, Sadie Sink, and Kit Connor, and Black Panther 3, starring David Jonsson and directed by Ryan Coogler.
