Disney is bringing one of its most intense survival stories to CinemaCon 2026 with Whalefall, and the studio is set to debut first footage from the upcoming adaptation during its panel on Thursday.
Based on the acclaimed novel 2023 novel by the same name penned by Daniel Kraus, Whalefall follows a scuba diver searching for his deceased father’s remains, only to be swallowed whole by a massive sperm whale. With just one hour of oxygen left, the story unfolds as a desperate race against time as he fights to escape from inside the creature.
The trailer released Thursday centers on Austin Abrams’ character, who is seen diving deeper into the ocean in full scuba gear as the tension slowly builds. What begins as a quiet descent quickly turns ominous, as distant, unidentifiable sounds echo through the water.
The footage teases multiple sea creatures before revealing something far more massive swimming amongst them. A tentacled figure briefly appears, darting upward and disappearing with a quickness, leaving Abrams disoriented. Moments later, a deep clicking sound signals the arrival of something much bigger, as a towering presence swims past him, wiping out everything in its path.
Smaller sea life begin fleeing in panic, with Abrams following, only to realize too late what they’re running from. The massive creature tears through the ocean, destroying everything around it as it closes in. And just as Abrams attempts to escape, swimming desperately toward the surface, the creature gains on him. In a sudden, violent moment, it grabs him and drags him deeper into the darkness. He struggles, kicking and fighting back, but is quickly entangled in the creature’s tentacle-like appendages.
The trailer then delivers its most shocking moment as the creature opens its mouth, with Abrams holding on for dear life as he clings on to the creature’s teeth in a desperate attempt to avoid being swallowed. He fights to free himself, even kicking at the inside of its mouth, but his leg becomes trapped. Within seconds, he’s pulled further in, sliding down the creature’s throat, screaming out in pain as the screen cuts to black.
The trailer sets the tone for what appears to be a claustrophobic, high-stakes survival thriller, fully embracing the novel’s premise of a man trapped inside a massive sea creature with limited oxygen and no way out. In addition to Abrams, Emily Rudd, Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, Jane Levy, John Ortiz are also starring in the film.
Whalefall is set to hit theaters October 16, 2026.
