Why There’s No New High Potential Tonight (April 14) & When Fresh Episodes Release

High Potential season 2 left a major cliffhanger in “Family Tree,” but the resolution won’t come until much later. Kaitlin Olson’s adaptation of the hit French series, HPI, easily found its audience in the United States when it premiered in 2024, immediately becoming one of the most-watched series. ABC built on that success in the 2025-2026 TV cycle by putting out more intense weekly cases interwoven with increasingly complicated personal stories.

Several overarching storylines culminated in High Potential season 2, episode 18, which made up for a less interesting case compared to its season 1 counterpart. Karadec’s year-long reconciliation with his ex-girlfriend, Lucia, ended in massive disappointment, while Roman’s case had a new development, although still far from being resolved. Arguably the biggest takeaway from “Family Tree,” however, is the fatal stabbing of Nick Wagner, in light of confirmation that Steve Howey is leaving High Potential. Unfortunately, viewers will have to wait for answers.

High Potential Season 2 Has Officially Entered Its Hiatus

ABC is not airing new episodes of High Potential season 2 tonight, April 12, 2026, for a simple reason — its year has already ended. The procedural wrapped its sophomore year with “Family Tree,” which is the 18th episode of its most recent run. Because High Potential season 2 premiered early in mid-September 2025 and with minimal interruption in its run, it was able to finish its official season order, hence its year ending earlier than its peers.

The 2025-2026 network TV cycle is now in its final few weeks, and yet, ABC still hasn’t confirmed the returns of its two major shows for next season.

Instead of a new High Potential episode, ABC is moving Scott Speedman’s RJ Decker to its timeslot at 9PM ET tonight, airing episode 7, “You’ve Got Bale.” The freshman series is set to occupy that hour until it ends its ongoing run. However, ABC is running a rebroadcast of one of the most bombastic episodes of High Potential season 2, “If You Come for the Queen,” at 10 PM ET. It’s uncertain if more episodes of Olson’s show will rerun at this time, but it would be a great way to fill that block while also catching up viewers on the series.

When The Next New High Potential Episode Will Release & What It Will Be About

There’s good and bad news about High Potential‘s future and how it will answer lingering questions left by “Family Tree.” For starters, ABC has already confirmed the show for the 2026-2027 TV cycle. This means that unless there’s a major overhaul in the network’s programming, High Potential is coming back for season 3 at some point in the upcoming fall. Unfortunately, it’s a much longer wait compared to midseason breaks. To make it worse, the show is losing two important creatives in the process: showrunner Todd Harthan and season 2 series regular Steve Howey.

High Potential season 2 finale left Nick Wagner’s life hanging in the balance, but ABC doesn’t wait until next fall to confirm Steve Howey’s fate.

Based on where ABC left things off for the series, High Potential season 3 is expected to tackle all the lingering storylines when new episodes roll out. Wagner’s fate will immediately be addressed, considering Howey’s status as a cast member, which is arguably the most urgent plot to address. With both Karadec and Morgan without any romantic prospects, the series might start aggressively setting up their slow-burn romance. Those are all on top of providing substantial developments in Roman’s case.
