Windscribe has just rolled out a major update of its VPN app, and it’s all about giving users more control and making it easier to use.
Starting with a redesigned home screen, a new “Look and Feel” settings section, and faster access to important toggles, the changes might seem small, but could significantly improve the users’ experience.
This latest Windscribe update also introduces a host of personalization options that even the best VPN services don’t normally offer. Here’s what’s new, and why it matters.
What’s new in the latest Windscribe VPN update?
Windscribe VPN comes in two flavors: the Pro version and the Windscribe Free. Both of them just got an upgrade as part of the latest update.
First, Windscribe rolled out some changes to its user interface. The UI is now cleaner and easier on the eyes, and you can choose between the default Alpha or the minimalistic Van Gogh skins. Mobile users of its iPhone and Android VPN apps get light and dark modes.
The main screen just became a lot more useful, too. You can immediately access the new “Look and Feel” section, which really digs into the customization part of the update.
More importantly, the update puts crucial network settings front and center, including Auto-Secure and Preferred Protocol – both found by tapping on your network name on the main screen. You can also change your VPN protocol here now, as opposed to digging through the settings.

Next, customization. You could already customize Windscribe VPN with your own background (both when you’re connected and disconnected), but now, you can also choose from preset backgrounds. Adjust the background to your tastes once you pick one, including aspect ratio. Supported formats include .png, .jpg, and .gif (only on desktop).
You can now add custom sounds that play when you connect or disconnect from VPN, too. Windscribe has its own library of preset sounds, but you can also upload your own .mp3, .wav, or .m4a files to use, with the last one only available on mobile, and best used on iOS.
Lastly, you can now rename every single server location in the app to anything you want. It might not seem like a groundbreaking feature, but it could come in handy.
The update adds a bit of fun, but there’s more to it than that
It’s hard to call this update a big deal, but even if you’re not into customization, there are some benefits.
Auto-Secure is a feature that automatically activates the VPN when you join an untrusted network, making it easier to find. This, in turn, could protect more users. Meanwhile, changing protocols, such as from WireGuard to Stealth, used to be a multi-step process, but now, it’s a single click.
In our Windscribe VPN review, one of the few cons listed was that its apps are a little complex and intimidating to newbies. Making these important settings accessible is a crucial step in the right direction.
And all that customization? Not necessary, sure, but being able to name your servers can help you pick the ones you know work best for you. It’s not groundbreaking, but it helps. Sounds, on the other hand, alert you immediately if your connection drops, which makes them useful as well.
