Ye is headed across the pond for several high-profile performances.
The controversial artist, formerly known as Kanye West, fresh off the release of his new album, “Bully,” will headline all three days of the Wireless Festival in July in London. The announcement comes over a decade after he last performed in the U.K., taking the stage at Glastonbury in 2015.
“Ye’s UK comeback will be an extraordinary chapter in Wireless’s story,” said festival organizers, who have not announced any other artists on the lineup, per BBC. The Chicago-born rapper is expected to treat fans to a mix of his newest tracks and hits from earlier in his career.
Ye, who has fallen from grace in recent years over his espousing of antisemitic and racist beliefs, is attempting a seeming comeback. He dropped “Bully” earlier this month, after taking out a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal to apologize for his past remarks. Ye has also been accused in two lawsuits of sexual misconduct by former employees.
Once a titan of the genre, the “Heartless” artist has since become better known for public outbursts on social media deriding both Jewish and Black people. He has lauded Adolf Hitler with the release of a song titled “Heil Hitler” and used pro-Nazi language in his social media posts and tirades.
For loyal fans, the album and upcoming performances may present a welcome reprieve from years of erratic behavior and hate-filled music, but for his detractors, it may be difficult to scrub the phantom image of his former self from the tracks. Ye doubled down on his apology in an interview with Vanity Fair and attributed recent behavior to a brain injury and being on the wrong medication.
He said his wife, Bianca Censori, “recognized” the issues and helped him find an “effective and stabilizing course correction in my regime from a rehab facility in Switzerland.”
The Wireless Festival isn’t the only live gig Ye has booked. The rapper is set to play SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 3, according to the venue’s website. The show, billed “Ye Live in Los Angeles,” is described as the only performance in the Southern California city in a promo image for the event.
