One of the great things about cinema is that the legacy and appreciation garnered for a film is not entirely defined by its initial release. While there are certainly many out there that instantly became classics of their respective genres, the slow crawl of streaming releases, word-of-mouth, and overall growing appreciation over time means that many films achieve their classic status long after they were initially released.
Each genre has a selection of films fighting to be the classics of the next era, yet few are as exciting and full of great watches as the thriller. From high-octane action thrillers to slow-paced, methodical psychological thrillers, the genre’s versatility has made it one of the most captivating and exciting, with countless iconic classics to choose from. Exceptional thrillers have continued into the modern age, with these films standing out as not quite full-on classics to the public, but certainly on their way there.
‘The Beekeeper’ (2024)
Jason Statham is one of the most lucrative and successful leading actors in the world of action-thrillers — every year has at least one Statham thriller. However, many of them are rather flash-in-the-pan and haven’t had real staying power, with the clear exception of David Ayer‘s The Beekeeper. The film ramps up the absurdity and campiness of classic Statham conventions to the extreme, with a whole bunch of goofy bee puns and stylish action elevating it to be a highlight of Statham’s modern career.
The film certainly garnered some buzz (pun intended) when it came out, but more than any other original Statham effort of the decade, The Beekeeper feels refreshing and fun in a way that makes it incredibly rewatchable. It certainly helps that the film is receiving a sequel this upcoming January, further cementing the original’s status as the must-watch Jason Statham thriller of the modern age.
‘Burning’ (2018)
An incredibly underrated South Korean psychological thriller, Burning gets a lot of praise for its exceptional central performance by Steven Yeun. It’s a story of intrigue and mystery that keeps the audience engaged from beginning to end, forcing them to constantly second-guess themselves and feel uneasy about the truth. It’s one of many exceptional films by Lee Chang-dong, whose prominence as one of the best South Korean directors continues to grow with each new effort, subsequently increasing the classic status of his previous works.
The film sees a deliveryman (Yoo Ah-in) reuniting with his childhood friend (Jeon Jong-seo) before coming into contact with a mysterious young man (Yeun). It doesn’t take long before this deliveryman begins to believe that the mysterious man is dangerous, and that his childhood friend may be in danger if she continues to interact with this elusive and unknowable figure.
‘Juror #2’ (2024)
Clint Eastwood has more undeniable classics under his belt than most filmmakers could even hope to achieve, whether it be timeless Westerns or the many exceptional thrillers of his later career. However, the director’s latest and possibly final film is a perfect swan song; Juror #2 truly is that special. Despite the critical praise, its muted release and minimal marketing held back what could have been a major awards contender.
Still, word of mouth has helped the film from falling into complete obscurity; a legal thriller this great and well crafted frankly deserves to be celebrated among the very best films in Eastwood’s career. It follows a family man (Nicholas Hoult) who, after being summoned for jury duty in a high-profile murder case, comes to realize that not only is the defendant innocent, but it is, in fact, he himself who is responsible for the death at the center of this murder.
‘eXistenZ’ (1999)
The prominence and larger celebration of the works of David Cronenberg have only continued to grow with each passing year. His distinct style of abstract visuals and the dynamic between technology and humanity have kept audiences enamored for generations. However, when eXistenZ premiered, reception was only lukewarm, leading to it being reexamined and celebrated more and more in the modern age for just how ahead-of-its-time its concepts and themes were.
The film follows a prominent game designer who finds herself the target of an assassination attempt while inside of her state-of-the-art virtual reality video game experience. Unlike the traditional VR technologies that were seen in previous sci-fi films or even in the modern day, eXistenZ is drenched in classic Cronenberg style, with the technology being organic material that directly plugs into people’s installed bio-ports. Its concepts of human autonomy and its connection to digital media are more prevalent than ever, so it’s easy to see how this forgotten sci-fi thriller may become a modern cult classic.
‘Primetime’ (2026)
One of the standout thrillers of 2026, Primetime‘s layered look at the inner workings of Chris Hansen and Dateline’s To Catch a Predator is drenched in layers of style, symbolism, and a reflection on the chaos of 2000s culture as a whole. At the center of it all is an acclaimed performance by Robert Pattinson, who expertly taps into the mannerisms and sadistic charm of this 2000s icon to make the film a highlight of his modern career.
The impact of the film is largely still being written, as it was released in theaters just last month and hasn’t had its digital release yet. However, with how much overwhelming praise it has received, combined with its continued relevance with the blurring of the lines between justice and sadistic entertainment, it’s easy to see the pathway for Primetime to be considered one of the defining thriller classics of the 2020s.
‘No Other Choice’ (2025)
South Korean director Park Chan-wook is no stranger to concocting absolute classics within the thriller genre, as films like Oldboy and The Handmaiden are celebrated as some of the best of their respective decades. However, No Other Choice distinguishes itself from Park’s previous thrillers, with an edge of dark comedy and satire to make it equal parts hilarious as it is insightful and brilliant. The film plays to his greatest strengths as a filmmaker and is also incredibly topical to today’s culture and concerns.
The film follows a veteran paper mill manager (Lee Byung-hun) who is going through the pains of a ruthless job market after suddenly being laid off. With seemingly no other choice and with his integrity and family’s livelihood on the line, he embarks on a chaotic plan to murder his fiercest competition to give himself the best shot possible of securing a job. The film fully delivers on the madness and insightful nature of its premise, even finding ways to be insightful about the looming dread and inevitable job losses of artificial intelligence.
‘Michael Clayton’ (2007)
Michael Clayton was a case of a great film being sadly overshadowed by some of the greatest movies of all time. When it’s constantly facing off against No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, and Juno, it isn’t hard to see why it hasn’t had as much staying power for general audiences. However, enough time has passed that more and more people are beginning to appreciate this icon of George Clooney‘s career.
The legal thriller sees Clooney as the titular lawyer Michael Clayton, a “fixer” whose job it is to clean up messes for its prestigious law firm. His latest task, however, has him defending a massive chemical company from a multi-billion-dollar class action lawsuit, which they are guilty of. This story of moral compromise and corporate power was incredibly timely in 2007 and proves to be even more relevant nearly 2 decades later.
‘Obsession’ (2026)
No horror thriller has quite taken the world by storm in recent years like Curry Barker‘s box-office phenomenon, Obsession. This modern twist on the classic monkey’s paw concept achieved overwhelming success and will certainly be celebrated as one of the defining films of 2026. What is still in question, however, is whether its qualities will allow it to achieve true classic status after all the hype dies down, although it’s difficult to imagine a world where Obsession isn’t a new modern classic.
The film is deeply unsettling, following a spineless lead character whose insidious choices end up stealing away his humanity and transforming the object of his apparent love into a nightmarish force that doesn’t even come close to resembling the original person. It scratches just the right itch between a disturbing premise and genuinely effective scares; Obsession is easily the best horror film of 2026 as well as one of its best thrillers.
‘Good Time’ (2017)
The Safdie Brothers have absolutely made it in terms of critical and commercial success, between great directorial work and some great on-screen performances. However, if any singular film were to act as a symbol of all of their strengths as artists, it would be their breakout hit, Good Time. While not as instantly recognizable as Uncut Gems or Marty Supreme, Good Time has the classic Safdie formula perfected to a T, seeing a morally corrupt lead character on a spiraling quest of madness that gets more corrupt and vile as it goes on.
It features a great visual style, immaculate performances from Robert Pattinson and Benny Safdie, and a lingering sense of pain as it isn’t afraid to tap into deeply corrupt concepts. The only thing that has really held back the film from being a bigger cult classic is that the Safdies’ subsequent films have managed to be even larger and more successful. Still, given another 10 years to reflect on the film’s strengths, Good Time easily has what it takes to be an undeniable thriller classic.
‘Whiplash’ (2014)
Whiplash is about 90% of the way there in terms of being considered an untouchable masterpiece classic of the modern age. This powerful story of the toxicity inherent in the pursuit of perfection has been celebrated since its release, thanks to masterful directing and one of the best supporting performances of all time by J.K. Simmons. The only reason that Whiplash isn’t considered a true classic yet is time, as its greatness simply needs to simmer in the hearts of those who continuously look back on it as one of the best thrillers of the 21st century.
It certainly also helps that Whiplash has begun to make massive inroads with the next generation of moviegoers, with many Gen Z audiences falling in love with the film’s sense of style and its insightful messaging. There’s simply so much to examine and discuss with this rich masterpiece, attracting the same fervor as the likes of Fight Club and Pulp Fiction. If the film isn’t already a classic, it will undeniably be considered one in 10 years.
