Nathan Fielder is one of the hottest names in all of film and television after the release of You Can See Everything earlier this month. The documentary, which follows the final weeks of freedom for embattled former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes, was co-directed by Fielder and Lance Oppenheim (who also helmed Primetime last month).
Oppenheim’s involvement in a project like this is no surprise — the young director has been involved with numerous dramatic documentaries in his short career thus far. Fielder, however, is better known for his comedy chops, having hosted shows on networks like Comedy Central and HBO.
As a result, You Can See Everything stands out in Fielder’s filmography, but that’s not to say that this dramatic turn is out of left field. Despite focusing primarily on comedy early in his career, Fielder has still dabbled in more dramatic topics, too; for example, in The Rehearsal, Fielder investigated the underlying cause of famous plane crashes.
Therefore, those looking for more Nathan Fielder content after watching You Can See Everything in theaters have a lot to choose from. On one hand, there are comedic projects that Fielder has made, in which he puts on the same sort of persona that he does in the new documentary. At the same time, Fielder has also proven himself capable of getting serious, which may be of interest to new fans of his as well.
Nathan For You
The show that arguably put Fielder on the map is the aptly named Nathan For You, which aired on Comedy Central from 2013 to 2017 and was created by him and Michael Koman. Like You Can See Everything, Nathan For You plays as a documentary of sorts; however, the series takes on a much more comedic (and satirical) role.
In the series, Fielder plays a semi-fictionalized version of himself, using his business degree to offer help to struggling businesses (Fielder himself actually does have a college business degree in real life). The comedy comes from Fielder suggesting outlandish ideas to these businesses in order to boost traffic.
For example, one episode focuses on Fielder assisting a locally owned gas station in Los Angeles, California. Fielder convinces the manager to put the price of gas at roughly $1.30 per gallon, almost three dollars lower than rival competitors in the area. The “trick” Fielder had in mind for this is, crucially, that the gas only costs this little after rebate, and he tasked every customer with delivering the rebate slip themselves, which is conveniently (or inconveniently) located on the top of a mountain. To his surprise, a handful of customers are actually willing to spend their entire day hiking up the mountain.
The Rehearsal
Fielder’s follow-up to Nathan For You came out five years later, this time on HBO. The premise for The Rehearsal shares many similarities with its predecessor, too; both feature a semi-fictionalized version of Fielder, equipped with awkward humor and poor social skills.
The Rehearsal, however, focuses on Fielder helping to prepare real life people for tense and/or awkward conversations or life events they are planning on having in the near future; one example is Fielder aiding someone in their preparation to confess a lie to a loved one.
The comedy comes not only from the awkwardness of the situations, but from the lengths Fielder goes to recreate the scene. He commissions intricate sets that mirror locations in the lives of the participants, and even hires actors that are aware of intimate details of the lives of the participants as well.
The Curse
One of Fielder’s most ambitious projects is The Curse, which aired on Showtime and Paramount+ in 2024. Unlike Nathan For You and The Rehearsal, The Curse is a scripted series, marking the first time that Fielder has acted in a narrative story. The show follows two HGTV hosts as they navigate a complicated marriage, their desires to start a family, and, perhaps most interestingly, a curse that comes upon them after their work on network television.
