5 Cinematic Video Games Better Than Most Movies

[

Video games have reached a point where some titles offer a cinematic experience far greater than anything audiences can see in theaters. In the past two decades, video games have grown into gorgeous works of art that deliver a thrilling interactive experience with unforgettable performances that would be a genuine shame to miss out on. Many video games offer sharp writing and emotional highs and lows that reward players for their investment in the story.

The difference between watching a great story on screen and actively playing through one often makes the payoff all the more satisfying. Like movies, video games range across a variety of genres, ensuring there’s something for everyone, no matter whether you’re a fan of high-octane action or choice-based adventures. However, unlike films, these cinematic video games often tell longer, more expansive stories that truly immerse players in their world in ways that simply can’t be beat.

Detroit: Become Human

Detroit: Become Human was developed by Quantic Dream and written by David Cage. Released in 2018, the game takes place in a near-future where androids have become an ordinary part of life until a growing number of them gain consciousness and free will. The story centers around three CyberLife Androids, including Connor, an android detective who investigates deviant machines alongside Lieutenant Hank Anderson; Kara, a housemaid android who runs away with a child, Alice, to seek freedom and peace; and Markus, an advanced prototype android who becomes the leader of a revolution.

The game first released on PlayStation 4 before being released on Windows PC the following year. It stands out for a number of reasons, but most notably is how each storyline explores a different perspective of the same conflict and the fact that each choice genuinely alters the story’s outcome with over 80 different possible flowchart endings. Detroit: Become Human delivers thrilling gameplay as well as a moving story filled with emotional depth and complex characters.

Detroit: Become Human is a visually stunning game that has everything from action to mystery to romance. Paired with the moral dilemmas and social commentary, the story alone is an unforgettable experience that explores thought-provoking ideas that have real-world implications as technology continues to advance. From its plot to its visuals to the gameplay itself, Detroit: Become Human is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Life Is Strange

Life is Strange

Released in 2015, Life Is Strange is a story-driven, choice-based game developed by Dontnod Entertainment that follows Max Caulfield, a photography student at Blackwell Academy, who unexpectedly discovers she has the ability to rewind time. Taking place in her hometown of Arcadia Bay, Max reconnects with her childhood friend Chloe Price after rewinding time to save her life. Together, the two begin to investigate the disappearance of Rachel Amber, a fellow student and close friend of Chloe’s. However, Max and Chloe’s reunion gradually expands into a far darker mystery that clashes with Max’s attempts to alter fate.

While the rewind mechanics are what instantly stand out, Life Is Strange is ultimately driven by its characters rather than the powers. Max and Chloe’s relationship takes center stage as their bond gradually strengthens after years apart. Through their conversations and choices, the game builds up an emotional story that rewards attention to detail. Paired with its indie soundtrack, the game excels at creating a strong atmosphere that adds to the overall narrative experience.

Life Is Strange may not be a fast-paced game filled with action, and despite being a choice-based game, there are only two main endings. That said, the story it tells is emotional, complex, and pushes players to make difficult choices that determine the game’s final outcome. Life Is Strange doesn’t shy away from tragedy or consequences, making it a powerful game that can’t be overlooked.

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End came out in 2016, and marks the conclusion of Nathan Drake’s story. Taking place several years after he leaves behind his life of adventure, Nathan’s quiet life is interrupted when his presumably dead brother Sam appears and asks for his help in finding the lost treasure of a pirate named Henry Avery after his life is threatened by a drug lord. Together, along with longtime partner Victor Sullivan, Nathan begins one final adventure that isn’t exactly what it seems.

Uncharted consists of six main games, with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves standing out alongside A Thief’s End. However, Uncharted 4 not only stands as the most commercially successful game in the franchise but is arguably one of its most cinematic and thrilling, as well as a fitting, unforgettable conclusion to Nathan Drake’s story. Paired with Naughty Dog’s exceptional motion capture and expressive performances, every moment came to life and felt important to the overarching narrative.

At its best, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End truly felt like a blockbuster adventure film, where every scene was interactive, and every cutscene was practically seamless with the gameplay. It’s a fast-paced story with moments of relief, making it well-balanced while also remaining engaging from beginning to end.

God of War follows Kratos years after the events of the original trilogy. The former Greek god tries to build a quieter life in the Norse wilderness with his young son Atreus after the death of Laufey, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’ mother. The two set out to fulfill her final wish of spreading her ashes from the highest peak across the nine realms; however, their journey becomes far more dangerous than anticipated as they encounter powerful Norse gods as well as Kratos’s own violent past.

Developed by Santa Monica Studio, God of War stands out for its beautiful mythical settings and impressive single-shot camera use. Narratively, the story is incredibly personal, exploring grief, fatherhood, and redemption through Kratos’ journey. As he attempts to become a better father for his son, Kratos undergoes difficult lessons and comes out a stronger man in the end. The exceptional performances from the actors reinforce this emotional journey while never failing to deliver fast-paced, high-stakes action that the game promised players.

God of War, as well as its direct sequel, God of War Ragnarök, excels at cinematic presentation and conveying such a personal story. Kratos and Atreus’ journey not only tells a powerful story about family and redemption, but also creates an unforgettable experience that movies simply can’t recreate. God of War easily stands out as one of gaming’s most unforgettable series with some of the most iconic characters.

In this devastated version of the world, a hardened survivor named Joel accepts the dangerous mission of transporting Ellie, a 14-year-old girl who is immune to the infection, across the country for the rebel group known as the Fireflies. Developed by Naughty Dog in collaboration with Iron Galaxy Studios, the game is a masterpiece that is renowned for its emotional storytelling, atmospheric worldbuilding, strong character writing and development, and, of course, thrilling and intense gameplay. As Joel and Ellie’s relationship develops throughout the game, the story also provides players with deeper insight into both characters, allowing them to feel authentic and relatable.

Along with the game’s detailed environments and strong character performances, the game comes to life in ways that truly connect with players, making the experience that much more unforgettable and immersive.
