5 Most Surprising TV Show Cancellations Of 2026 (So Far)

[

Even though we are only midway through 2026, quite a few TV shows have already been canceled this year. Some of these canceled shows struggled to leave their mark, so it made sense that their respective streamers or networks decided to pull the plug on them. Others, however, had immense potential and many more stories to tell before they were axed a little too soon.

Many shows have performed incredibly well in 2026 and some have even been renewed already. As the year progresses, 2026 is also set to mark the return of many popular ongiong shows that have had a strong run for several years now. For instance, Silo season 3 is set to land on Apple TV soon while Reacher season 4‘s release is also on the horizon.

A handful of shows also reached their natural conclusions and ended their runs on their own terms instead of being canceled prematurely. For instance, after lasting for several seasons, shows like The Boys, Outlander, and Good Omens finally saw the conclusive arcs of their relative stories this year. Unfortunately, unlike them, a few shows were far from their natural endings but were still forced to end after a season or two.

Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock thrived on Prime Video and has also been renewed for another season. However, while one unique take on Sherlock Holmes‘ lore performed well, the other one reached an unfortunate. Starring Morris Chestnut as Dr. Watson, CBS’ Watson followed an intriguing premise where it walked through John Watson’s return to his medical career after Sherlock Holmes’ death.

While the show remained divisive among critics, its unique story allowed it to gain enough viewership in season 1 to get renewed for another installment. After season 2, though, the show was canceled, likely because of low viewership and underwhelming critical ratings. To a large degree, its cancellation makes sense.

It is still hard not to be surprised by its sudden ending because of how much potential its core concept seemed to hold.

PONIES (2026)

Peacock’s PONIES premiered to almost unanimous acclaim and still holds an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 94%. The show was widely praised for its mishmash of genres and fun take on familiar spy thriller tropes. Despite landing in the good books of viewers and critics, though, PONIES seemingly struggled to etch its own place in an overcrowded genre.

Perhaps, PONIES‘ biggest issue was its overreliance on well-known plot devices of the spy thriller genre and its inability to bring something radically distinct to the table. It were these familiar elements in the show that prevented it from gaining more attention and eventually led to its cancellation.

Palm Royale (2024-2026)

After releasing in 2024, Palm Royale might have struggled to become as mainstream as other popular Apple TV shows and even leave its mark among critics. However, during the awards season, the series was a heavy hitter and even landed many Emmy nominations during its run. Despite having a lot going in its favor, though, Palm Royale could not last beyond two seasons.

Its biggest hurdle likely came from its high production value, from everything like its flawless 1960s/70s period set pieces to the costume designs of its ensemble cast. In season 2, the show also took a creative swing by moving the entire high-society Florida sandbox over to Switzerland, which might have negatively impacted its viewership and paved the way for its cancellation.

Gen V (2023-2025)

Given how Gen V was always treated as a subset to The Boys and most of its core story developments tied into the overarching franchise’s story, it was hard not to suspect whether it would return after season 2. It made sense that after The Boys‘ ending, even Gen V would have no reason to continue its run. Still, Gen V‘s confirmed cancellation after season 2 seemed surprising because of how its characters were treated.

Throughout Gen V‘s runtime, its main character Marie was treated as an up-and-coming franchise lead who would eventually beat Homelander. Even her young supe friends were set up as potential allies to the titular Boys. The Boys season 5, however, nerfed all Gen V characters by rewriting their lore and hardly giving a handful of them a few minutes of screen time.

If Gen V‘s characters had been given well-rounded conclusions in The Boys season 5, the spin-off cancellation would not have seemed half as bad.

The Boroughs (2026)

Produced by the Duffer Brothers, The Boroughs seemed to have the potential to become one of Netflix’s new big hits in the sci-fi genre. The show’s unanimous acclaim after its premiere further cemented this belief. Even in terms of viewership, the show seemingly dominated streaming charts for quite some time. Despite this, though, it was canceled after just one season.

The Boroughs even managed to earn Stephen King’s stamp of approval (via Threads), who called it “an absolute delight.” That, too, however, was not enough to change Netflix’s decision to pull the plug on it. While many factors might have contributed to its cancellation, The Boroughs seems like the perfect example of how Netflix’s increasingly unforgiving approach to green lighting projects based on complex parameters is arguably harming streaming.

The Boroughs still works surprisingly well as a self-contained show with only a few loose ends in its final arc, but it is the TV show’s long-term potential that makes its cancellation so disappointing.
