8 Great Rom-Coms Starring The Voicemails For Isabelle Cast

[

Right now, the number one movie on Netflix is Voicemails for Isabelle, which makes it one of the most popular movies in the entire world, given how many millions of people are subscribed to the streaming service. It isn’t often that an original romantic comedy finds its way to the top of the streaming charts, which is usually reserved for the latest releases featuring the biggest actors in the world or blockbusters that have just arrived on the platform.

Voicemails of Isabelle follows Jill, a woman who copes with the sudden loss of her sister by leaving voicemails on her phone number. However, when that phone number gets reassigned, the man who gets it starts to listen to the voicemails and falls for the woman. Reviews are strong, with the film sitting at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and receiving praise for the heart at the center of the story, the comedic elements, and the impressive cast.

That cast is filled with talented actors like Zoey Deutch, Nick Robinson, Harry Shum Jr., and Lukas Gage, among others. For anyone who has fallen in love with Voicemails for Isabelle, there are plenty of romantic comedies out there worth checking out that also feature these performers.

Why Him? (2016)

The majority of the entries on this list feature Zoey Deutch, as she has the largest romantic comedy filmography of the cast. In Voicemails for Isabelle, she plays Jill, the grieving sister and the protagonist. Just about a decade ago, she appeared in what ended up being her first big movie, Why Him? Although her character, Stephanie Fleming, is at the focal point of the story, a lot of it centers on her father and hey boyfriend.

Why Him? sees Stephanie bring home her boyfriend, Laird, for the holidays, where he clashes with her father, Ned, because he’s not at all what her father was hoping for. Why Him? was a solid box office success and a big part of that was the holiday theme. It has become an easy movie for people to watch whenever Christmas comes around.

Moonshot (2022)

In Voicemails for Isabelle, Jill is an aspiring baker and her co-worker Arthur is played by Lukas Gage. He’s one of the more intriguing supporting characters and Gage has made a solid career out of supporting roles in Euphoria, The White Lotus, You, and American Vandal. He does the same thing in Moonshot.

This 2022 romantic comedy also has a sci-fi twist to it, as the story sees a college student and a barista sneak onto a space shuttle for Mars and while on the trip, they grow closer. While Cole Sprouse and Lana Condor are the leads, Gage pops up in a small role as Dalton. It’s a solid rom-com even if it doesn’t have a lot of Gage.

The Threesome (2025)

Returning to a Zoey Deutch project, The Threesome is one of her most recent roles. The title might not sound like the most romantic setup, yet it allows The Threesome to feel like a more modern take on the genre. The movie sees Connor (Jonah Hauer-King) strike up a conversation with Olivia (Deutch), which brings over the woman Connor is infatuated with, Jenny (Ruby Cruz).

The three end up flirting and engage in a threesome that night and things get more complicated when, soon after, both women become pregnant. The complex relationships between the three drive the story forward and there’s a solid amount of heart in this bittersweet rom-com that received solid reviews.

Love Hard (2021)

Romantic comedies and the holiday season seem to go hand in hand, which is the case with Love Hard. The Netflix original rom-com features Harry Shum Jr., who plays Andy in Voicemails for Isabelle, a good friend of Wes, the male main character. That said, his role in Love Hard is a bit smaller.

Love Hard focuses on Natalie (Nina Dobrev), who travels to meet her online crush for Christmas, only to find that she has been catfished by Josh. She agrees to stay and fake being the girlfriend of Josh (Jimmy O. Yang) to meet the guy he’s pretending to be (Darren Barnet), who lives in the same town. Of course, Josh and Natalie grow close and Shum appears as Josh’s more successful brother, Owen.

Love, Simon (2018)

The male lead of Voicemails for Isabelle is Wes, the man who ends up with Jill’s sister’s old phone number. Wes is portrayed by Nick Robinson, who appeared in a historic romantic comedy in 2018. He plays the titular Simon in Love, Simon, which was the first gay teen rom-com by a major film studio.

Love, Simon follows a closeted teen (Robinson) who struggles to balance the aspects of his life when a blackmailer threatens to out him to the school. Along the way, he also falls for someone he speaks to anonymously online and the final scenes where it all comes together are very touching.

Something From Tiffany’s (2022)

Why Him? wasn’t the only holiday romantic comedy featuring Zoey Deutch, as she also appears in the underrated Something From Tiffany’s. Based on the novel of the same name, the film sees Rachel (Deutch) and Ethan (Kendrick Sampson) fall for each other after a mishap involving jewelry from Tiffany’s.

Rachel and Ethan are both in relationships, so watching their own romance blossom is complicated, yet incredibly endearing. Deutch and Sampson have electric chemistry together and are able to boost this from a solid rom-com to a very entertaining one. It’s something of a hidden gem from 2022.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

The aforementioned Harry Shum Jr. has another small yet memorable role in the fantastic rom-com Crazy Rich Asians. This was the first film by a major Hollywood studio with a predominantly Chinese cast and it ended up being a box office hit, raking in over $200 million worldwide and leaving people clamoring for a sequel.

Based on a book of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians follows Rachel (Constance Wu) as she travels to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s (Henry Golding) family, only to learn that he’s ridiculously wealthy. Shum Jr. shows up in the mid-credits scene as the ex of Astrid (Gemma Chan) and word is that a sequel would feature more of him, though that follow-up has yet to happen and doesn’t look like it will.

Set It Up (2018)

Zoey Deutch is no stranger to Netflix original romantic comedies, appearing in Set It Up back in 2018. The movie also sees Deutch alongside a fellow actor who broke out soon after, Glen Powell. They play two overworked assistants who come up with a plan to get their demanding bosses to date each other, lessening their workloads.

As you’d expect though, they start to fall in love with each other, making for a heartwarming project. The comedy in Set It Up is also great, while Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs nearly steal the show as the bosses. Set It Up was a critical darling, scoring 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and is one of the best romantic comedies of the past decade. Anyone who is hooked on Voicemails for Isabelle should check it out for more of Zoey Deutch.
