- Snapseed has received a major update on iPhone
- This adds a camera toggle and manual controls
- However, this update hasn’t come to Android
Snapseed — a photo editor made by Google — hasn’t been updated on Android since May of 2024, yet the iPhone version got a major overhaul in June of 2025, and has now received another big update, this time turning it into a full-blown camera app.
That update gives you a camera icon in the top right corner of the app, which when tapped opens a viewfinder and lets you snap photos. Technically this isn’t entirely new, as Snapseed added a camera feature back in December, but for some reason only made it accessible via widgets and shortcuts, rather than from within the Snapseed app.
Now though, you have a button to tap, and as well as making the camera feature more visible and accessible, this latest update also adds a pro mode with manual controls for the ISO, shutter speed, and focus.
Beyond that, the Snapseed camera also includes modes that emulate various film cameras, and you can use any custom saved looks with the camera too.
You can also change, fine-tune, or revert any part of the look of a photo even once it has been saved, and the app comes with a selection of color themes for the camera viewfinder.
So it’s a decent offering, but neither this nor the previous visual overhaul are yet available on Android, and people are unsurprisingly unhappy about this.
Annoyance on Android
Over on Reddit, one commenter said “it seems like a slap in the face for Android users”, while many others also expressed annoyance or asked for it to come to Android. And it’s an understandable reaction — after all, if anything you’d think Android would get this first since it’s made by Google, but instead the Snapseed Android app seems neglected.
So what’s going on? While Google hasn’t specified, there are likely a few things at play. For one thing, the variety of devices on Android can mean it takes longer to test app updates. For another, there’s likely a separate team for the iOS version of Snapseed, so it may be working somewhat independently from the Android team. Also, it’s possible that the iOS version of Snapseed is more popular, and is therefore being prioritized.
But the good news is that this camera feature likely will come to the Android app sooner or later. Snapseed’s product lead has already confirmed on Reddit that the company will be updating the Android Snapseed app, and while they haven’t specifically said that the camera feature is part of those update plans, we’d be surprised if it wasn’t.
That confirmation was made back in December, at which point Snapseed claimed to be a few months away from updating the Android app, so hopefully that means updates of some kind will arrive soon.
