- Windscribe released a beta Android app designed for users in Iran, Russia

Windscribe has officially launched a new beta version of its Android VPN app specifically engineered to bypass the intensifying internet censorship currently gripping Iran and Russia.
The update, announced via the provider’s social media channels, introduces native support for the AmneziaWG protocol, a stealth technology designed to mask VPN traffic as ordinary web activity. This should allow users to slip past the sophisticated Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) blocking methods used by authoritarian regimes.
This release delivers on a promise for “solutions” to the ongoing VPN crackdown made at the end of January, when Windscribe acknowledged that its standard connections were being aggressively targeted.
In a statement posted to its Telegram channel, Windscribe confirmed it was prioritizing this update to help users regain access to the free web.
“We are aware of the ongoing VPN connection issues in Iran and Russia and are working on solutions,” the company stated at the time. “This [AmneziaWG] has shown to be quite successful in getting around government blocks, and it is our highest priority to get this out into our native applications.”
How AmneziaWG can help Windscribe users
The core of this update is the integration of AmneziaWG. Previously, Windscribe users in restricted regions had to manually request a configuration file from customer support and use third-party software to connect via this VPN protocol.
With the new beta app, that functionality is built directly into the interface. This significantly lowers the technical barrier for users, who can now access the stealth protocol without needing complex manual setups or external clients.
While WireGuard is already known for its speed and security, its distinct data signature makes it easy for sophisticated government firewalls to identify and block. AmneziaWG modifies these packet signatures to look like random junk data or benign web traffic, making it much harder for censors to detect that a VPN is being used.

The launch comes at a critical time for digital privacy in both regions. Users in Iran and Russia have reported a sharp increase in VPN interference over the last month, with many popular services becoming intermittent or inaccessible.
Windscribe’s internal data reflected this struggle. In a poll conducted on its Telegram channel weeks before the launch, nearly half of the Iranian respondents reported that their VPN “never works,” while 52% of Russian users reported the same.
The provider noted that the majority of its affected user base was on mobile and PC platforms, driving the decision to roll out the Android solution first. “We’re also working on a Windows build to get this out ASAP,” Windscribe added in January.
How to get the new app
Because app stores like Google Play are often restricted or monitored in these regions, obtaining the best VPN software can be a challenge.
Users in Iran and Russia are encouraged to download the beta APK (Android Package Kit) directly from the official Windscribe Telegram channel or the company’s website, if accessible. Sideloading the app in this way bypasses the official app store, ensuring users can get the latest anti-censorship tools even if the store page is blocked.
Windscribe has stated that while this feature is currently in beta for Android, it will eventually be available to all users. “Once it is in the app, it will not be limited to paid users; everyone will have access,” the company confirmed.
While this update is a significant step, the cat-and-mouse game between VPN providers and government censors is constant. Windscribe’s direct integration of AmneziaWG represents a targeted, aggressive move to keep lines of communication open in two of the world’s most restrictive digital environments.
