The fashion industry is Olivia Rodrigo‘s playground, we’re just frolicking in it, says the cover of her new album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. Any spring 2026 dress trend would’ve started this era strong: most turn traditional femininity on its head, as the pop star often does. But Rodrigo’s babydoll dress proved the record’s vibe has been under our noses for weeks. Over the past two months, Rodrigo’s aesthetic has officially evolved from punk-rock to preppy.
Nothing confirms a celebrity’s sartorial shift like deleting every post on Instagram, which the It girl did bright and early on April 2. The last photo standing? The album cover, starring an upside-down Rodrigo on a swing set. She dangled from the metal swing in a bubblegum pink mini dress, with all the makings of a quintessential babydoll. A flat Peter Pan collar, contrasting cuffs, and cascading buttons all in white popped against the short-sleeve bodice. The word “love” embroidered on a white underlay emerged from beneath the dress’s micro-mini hem. Fingers crossed this wasn’t custom so we can all have a babydoll-clad summer.
Getting déjà vu? That’s because Rodrigo wore an almost-identical look in Paris last month. On March 6, she posed in front of the Eiffel Tower in a vintage Anna Sui babydoll dress, featuring the same curved collar, white cuffs, and bust buttons seen on the album cover. Long sleeves and its Spring 1994 runway date were the only major differences.

Judging by the Grammy winner’s cover, black and pink are the album’s signature shades. She started teasing her shift from Guts purple to pink on her Feb. 20 birthday, dressed in a babydoll-adjacent Blumarine mini, a rosy Burberry trench coat, and matching mules. A week later, the “Vampire” singer wore a salmon-colored take on the lace-trimmed slip trend in Chloé’s Fall 2026 front row.

Rodrigo even tested the anti-Sour hue at the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. Valentino created a micro-mini dress—including a skirt full of feathers—from various pastel shades of pink. Even the oversize bow atop her waistband got the You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love memo.

Rodrigo has been tight-lipped about her third studio album in recent weeks. At the Chloé fashion show, WWD asked if pink was her “new signature color,” to which she replied: “Oh my gosh, I don’t know. I’m just feeling girly lately, I guess!”
Her You Seem Pretty Sad era marks a major shift from Rodrigo’s first two album covers. She wore a plaid Clueless-esque skirt for Sour, and channeled the peekaboo bra trend for Guts, both of which set the tone for future performance and press looks. That said, expect Rodrigo to bring on the babydoll dresses before the album’s June 12 release.
