Battlestar Galactica has had a frustrating history in the years since its acclaimed 2004 reboot came to an end, leaving longtime fans wondering whether the franchise will ever make a proper comeback.
From short-lived spinoffs like Caprica to the ambitious Peacock revival that spent years in development before being scrapped in 2024, the franchise has struggled to return to its former glory. Despite these disappointments, fans remain optimistic that there’s still a future for the beloved sci-fi universe.
Fortunately, Battlestar Galactica just received its first genuinely exciting piece of news in quite some time, with the announcement that its beloved 2008 board game is finally getting a long-awaited re-release. And while a tabletop comeback might not be the revival everyone was hoping for, the upcoming release is bringing some familiar faces back into the fold, making this an especially promising development for longtime fans.
Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game is officially making a comeback, and the upcoming re-release will feature some familiar faces who helped bring the original game to life. Ghost Galaxy announced on October 22 that it had reached an agreement with Universal and Fantasy Flight Games to publish an updated edition of the beloved 2008 tabletop classic, with crowdfunding planned for early 2027.
What’s most exciting about the announcement is Ghost Galaxy’s connection to the original developer. The company is headed by Christian T. Petersen, the founder and former CEO of Fantasy Flight Games, which originally published Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game in 2008. Petersen personally oversaw the game’s original release, which was designed by Corey Konieczka and eventually received three expansions.
Fantasy Flight Games merged with Asmodee in 2014, and Petersen ultimately departed in 2018 before establishing Ghost Galaxy in 2019 alongside several former Fantasy Flight veterans. Although Ghost Galaxy is technically a different publisher, the connection means the new Battlestar Galactica game is being developed under the leadership of someone who was instrumental in its original success.
In the official announcement, Petersen expressed his excitement about revisiting the franchise, explaining that the team is enjoying its return to the original game’s characters and story while working to improve its design.
Fantasy Flight Games is also involved in the project, with Bill Altig, the company’s SVP of Narrative Games, expressing enthusiasm about bringing the classic back into print. However, it’s worth noting that Konieczka’s involvement in the new edition has not been confirmed.
The original game became particularly beloved for its hidden-traitor mechanics, which forced players to work together while secretly questioning whether their fellow crewmates were Cylons. It’s also become pretty scarce in modern board game circles, making the re-release a major win for longtime fans of the franchise and the larger board gaming community alike.
Ghost Galaxy hasn’t revealed exactly what improvements are planned for the new version or whether the original Pegasus, Exodus, and Daybreak expansions will return. However, with crowdfunding scheduled for early 2027 and a campaign page expected in the coming weeks, longtime Battlestar Galactica fans have plenty more to look forward to.
