Warning! This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 1 and 2.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 1 and 2 give the titular villain his own show for the first time, and explain how he plans to get back on top. Maul – Shadow Lord is the latest of Star Wars’ animated shows, taking the character who was resurrected in the medium into a new age. In terms of the wider Star Wars timeline, Shadow Lord is nestled between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, but before Obi-Wan Kenobi, Solo, and Star Wars Rebels.
The first reactions to Maul – Shadow Lord teased a lot of what is to come, with the first two episodes finally dropping on Disney+ for all to see. With eight more planned to release over the next four weeks, Star Wars fans have a lot to look forward to. The show begins with Maul shortly after escaping Order 66 in The Clone Wars season 7.
The former Sith is looking to recoup the power he once held as the leader of the Shadow Collective, a criminal organization that allowed him to take control of Mandalore once, find his closest enemies, and almost defeat them. In Shadow Lord episodes 1 and 2, exactly how he plans to do that is teased, as is another interesting part of his story that is yet to be revealed in the wider Star Wars franchise concerning a new character.
What Is Maul’s Plan In Shadow Lord Episodes 1 & 2?
In Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 1 and 2, the crux of the villain’s plan is simple: wreak havoc on his old allies. In The Clone Wars season 5, Maul was captured by Darth Sidious, leading the former to be abandoned by his allies from various crime syndicates. Two of these syndicates are led by Looti Vario and Deemis, respectively, while the other is the well-known Pyke syndicate.
Maul – Shadow Lord sees the character back with his Mandalorian allies, who stood with him in The Clone Wars season 7, looking to eliminate Vario, Deemis, the Pykes, and Crimson Dawn for prospering from his capture by Sidious and later defeat by Ahsoka Tano during the Siege of Mandalore. Episodes 1 and 2 waste no time in showcasing Maul’s revenge, with Deemis being killed and Vario being captured thanks to the former Sith’s machinations.
By the end of Shadow Lord episode 2, Maul has also made an enemy of the Pykes, setting into motion his plan to weaken them. Eventually, Maul is looking to become as powerful as he once was, with enough assets and reputation to get revenge on the one person at the top of his life: Darth Sidious.
Maul Also Has Visions Of An Apprentice
One of the more interesting parts of Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 1 and 2 is how Maul intends to further his cause to defeat the syndicates and Sidious: a Jedi named Devon. As one of the few Order 66 survivors in Star Wars, Devon is shown hiding out on the planet Janix with her master, Daki. However, Maul keeps receiving subtle visions pulling him towards Devon, leading him to capture her in the first two episodes.
Maul explains to both Devon and his loyal Mandalorian ally, Rook Kast, that he intends to show the former Jedi the error of the Order’s ways. He says she has been indoctrinated and needs retraining on how the galaxy truly is, echoing the words he said to Ahsoka Tano during the Siege of Mandalore.
Due to these visions, Maul is convinced that Devon should be his apprentice. That said, Devon doesn’t exactly see it this way. In Maul – Shadow Lord episode 2’s ending, Devon escapes Maul’s imprisonment, albeit by using the words he said to her, raising some more important questions.
Will Devon Join Maul & Is She The Canon Darth Talon?
The question of whether Devon will actually join Maul is left unanswered as of Maul – Shadow Lord episode 2’s ending. This will likely remain the case, with Maul trying to sway Devon over to his side over the course of the season. After all, the dynamic between Maul and Devon has been described as the former being a devil on the latter’s shoulder by the showrunners.
This can only mean that Maul will continue to push his ideology on Devon, trying to tempt the latter into thinking about things in a different way. His dialogue in Shadow Lord episodes 1 and 2 supports as much, with Maul insisting that Devon needs to change her mindset. Maul tells Devon that things are not as simple as good and evil, and that she must view him as something other than a villain now that the Jedi and the Republic have gone, thrusting the galaxy into lawlessness.
Maul Is “A Devil” On New Star Wars Character’s Shoulder, Tease 2026 Show Creators
EXCLUSIVE: The producers of the upcoming Star Wars series Maul – Shadow Lord open up about a brand-new character who’s been lured in by Darth Maul.
Although it remains to be seen whether Maul can break through Devon’s stubborn Jedi teachings and mindset, the possibility raises the question of whether she will become the canon version of Star Wars’ Darth Talon. Darth Talon was planned as Maul’s Twi’lek apprentice in George Lucas’ Star Wars sequel trilogy, before Disney’s trilogy became canon. Talon appeared in several Star Wars Legends stories, with Lucas wanting her and Maul to become intertwined.
As it was planned, this is unlikely, but many have questioned whether Devon will be Talon’s canon version. Again, this seems unlikely. Devon and Talon are simply too different, and Maul – Shadow Lord will need to pull off a masterclass in character writing to make them feel one and the same. Yes, Devon could become Maul’s apprentice eventually, but she will be her own character, likely not based on Darth Talon as many assumed.
How Maul – Shadow Lord Episodes 1 & 2 Set Up The Rest Of The Season
Aside from Maul’s plans with the crime syndicates and Devon, Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 1 and 2 set up the rest of season 1. The character of Lawson will be a big part of this, a captain of Janix’s local police force. Lawson wants to apprehend Maul and stop the criminal underworld wars from raging, though he wants to do so without following protocol and alerting the Empire.
Lawson clearly has his own issues with the Empire and doesn’t want to bring them down on the planet and its people. With pressure to do so, though, it seems Maul – Shadow Lord season 1 will involve the Empire sooner rather than later, raising an intriguing storyline for Lawson. Then there is Devon’s Jedi master, Daki, who wishes to find her and keep her safe from the Empire and Maul.
With all of this in mind, Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 1 and 2 have set up an elaborate cat-and-mouse story for the rest of the season with multiple groups at its center: the syndicates, the Empire, Janix’s local law enforcement, the surviving Jedi, and, of course, Maul himself. The latter character connects all of these, truly pinning him as the show’s main focus and setting up a compelling season with Maul at the center of a vast web of crime and darkness.
