After several rumors and leaks in 2025 surrounding the potential release of Half-Life 3, hype around the game hit an all-time high last year, despite predictions not panning out. The status of the game remains under wraps, assuming Valve is even working on it at all, and while that would be enough to deter any other fandom, HL3 hopefuls never say die.
That said, it’s been a long and tumultuous ride for Half-Life fans with one disappointment after another, and players are in desperate need of a win. Luckily, it appears one of Valve’s other major IPs is making a triumphant 2026 return, and it’s one that will keep us busy until Half-Life 3 eventually gets some form of announcement or confirmation from Valve.
After nearly 15 years, the fan-favorite and critically acclaimed Valve hit Portal is making an epic return with a brand-new game, and it’s completely free to download now (via Steam).
A New Portal Game In 2026? Go On, Then
A brand-new Portal game just released on Steam on April 17, 2026, and it’s a community-created mod overhaul project that is completely free to download now. Portal 2: Community Edition is a massive rework of the original sequel “that significantly enhances the way you make and play content, offering new capabilities such as a brand-new scripting system, an improved Hammer map editor and significantly increased limits over the original game.”
The P2:CE mod is absolutely huge for the Portal modding community, turning it into a more advanced platform for both players and creators. Built on an upgraded version of the Source engine, it significantly improves the game’s visuals with modern rendering techniques, better lighting, dynamic shadows, and higher-quality textures.
Beyond graphical upgrades, it expands capabilities for modders, enabling creators to build and share full custom campaigns, complete with multiple levels and unique gameplay ideas rather than just individual maps. While it does not replace the original Portal 2 story, it acts as a hub for user-generated content, giving players access to a wide range of new puzzles and experiences created by the community.
It also aims to remove many of the technical restrictions present in the base game, opening the door for more ambitious Portal-inspired projects. Overall, Portal 2: Community Edition serves as a modernized toolkit and playground, designed to extend the life of the game and empower a new generation of creators and fans.
Who Needs Half-Life 3?
While it’s not exactly Half-Life 3, the new Portal 2 mod is essentially a brand-new Portal game that will definitely scratch the same itch. It’s also one of the last games many fans were expecting to see make a return in 2026, and one that comes as a welcome surprise.
Arguably the next-best thing to a Half-Life 3 announcement, Portal 2: Community Edition is bound to draw renewed interest and offer players something fresh and exciting.
