3 Best Movies To Watch On Netflix This Weekend (May 9-10)

[

There is a new movie on Netflix that subscribers need to rush to see, and this weekend would also be a good one for two other very different releases. On last weekend’s Netflix movie recommendations, I examined Swapped, The Breakfast Club, and Bugonia. The first of them was the only Netflix Original movie on the list.

Likewise, this time around, there is only one Netflix Original movie on the recommendations, with the other two options being licensed films, but that does not make them any less exciting. This weekend, the roster was not chosen with a three-movie binge in mind. As such, there is something here for every taste. Fans of mysteries, dramas, and zombie adventures will be well-served.

Out of the options on last weekend’s Netflix weekend movie list, only Swapped is on the streaming service’s most-watched movies chart in the United States. Right now, the new animated release leads Netflix’s Top Ten in the US, which is a major feat. As for the three movies that subscribers should be watching this weekend, two of them are on that list.

While the Netflix Original movie has yet to enter the streamer’s charts, there is a high chance that it will happen, as it has only been released. There is no connective tissue between the three chosen films. However, each of them is individually strong enough to merit a weekend watch, either alone or with family and friends.

Green Book (2018)

First up is Green Book. Directed by Peter Farrelly, the drama brings two excellent performances from Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley and Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip. The film is based on a true story, chronicling Shirley’s 1962 tour, which saw Lip serve as his driver, exploring the bond between the characters and tackling racism at the time. Green Book was a major player on the awards circuit.

Green Book was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning three: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), and Best Original Screenplay. The film not only pleases critics with its complex exploration of difficult topics and nuanced performances, but also viewers. Green Book has a stellar 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is currently Netflix’s 9th most-watched in the United States.

Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)

Zombieland: Double Tap is one of the most entertaining and hilarious entries to ever come out of the zombie genre. It brings back the original’s star-studded cast: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin. Time might have passed, but the characters continue to have as much chemistry as they did in the 2009 horror comedy. The film knows how to mix laughs, gore, and action well.

Zombieland: Double Tap is currently the 8th most-watched movie on Netflix in the United States. The sequel enhances the franchise by widening the scope of its world through the introduction of a new type of zombie that makes encounters with the undead more dangerous than ever. By the end of the film, viewers will be left thinking that a third Zombieland movie could not come soon enough.

Ending the list is Netflix’s new Original movie, which makes it the main attraction of the weekend on the streamer. Remarkably Bright Creatures is based on a bestselling novel by Shelby Van Pelt. This is the movie to tug at the heartstrings, as Sally Field’s Tova befriends an unlikely ally, the octopus Marcellus (Alfred Molina), at the aquarium she works in, and Lewis Pullman’s Cameron, who is looking for his father.

Remarkably Bright Creatures was just released on Netflix on Friday, May 8.

They team up to solve that mystery, not knowing that their lives are about to change forever. In ScreenRant’s Remarkably Bright Creatures review, critic Molly Freeman gave the new Netflix movie a 7 out of 10 score, calling it “A warm hug.” The charming mystery will have viewers endeared by its characters in no time, making it the perfect cozy watch to finish the weekend on Netflix.
