Bruce Springsteen made a few jabs at Donald Trump and David and Larry Ellison before he performed on Stephen Colbert‘s second-to-last The Late Show on CBS.
“I’m here in support tonight for Stephen, because you’re the first guy in America who has lost his show because we got a president who can’t take a joke,” Springsteen said.
He went on, “And because Larry and David Ellison feel they need to kiss his ass to get what they want. Anyway, Stephen, these are small-minded people. They got no idea what the freedoms of this beautiful country are supposed to be about.”
Springsteen then performed Streets of Minneapolis, which he introduced in the wake of the ICE raids in Minnesota, in which federal agents shot and killed two protesters, Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
CBS announced last summer that Colbert’s show was being canceled, citing financial reasons. But the axing of the show, the top late night broadcast talk show, came just before Paramount secured FCC approval of its sale to the Ellisons’ Skydance. Colbert also had criticized pre-sale Paramount’s decision to settle Trump’s lawsuit against CBS for $16 million, calling it a “big fat bribe.”
On Wednesday, Trump was asked about Colbert’s final show and told reporters, “I’ll have a message on a later date.”
