After a colossal mistake, it seems like The Rookie has successfully taught ABC a valuable lesson in terms of building a franchise. It has been eight years since Alexi Hawley debuted the procedural that has quietly become a juggernaut on network TV. Spearheaded by Nathan Fillion, marking his network TV return after the success of Castle, The Rookie‘s premise was simple — a middle-aged man joining the police force late in life. The show has evolved since then, becoming more of an ensemble. With that comes more prominence, especially as Hawley develops the rest of the cast.
The Rookie‘s success, understandably, motivates ABC to further take advantage of it. Much like other popular police procedurals, the network is doing so by expanding the show’s world with the launch of a new spinoff. While not part of ABC’s fall 2026 lineup, the broadcaster is saving The Rookie and The Rookie: North for the midseason. Jay Ellis will take on the role of Alex Holland — the Pacific Northwest version of Nolan. Although the project is still months away from premiering, official details about it confirm that ABC has learned a valuable lesson when it comes to The Rookie universe.
The Rookie More Actively Establishes A Connection With Jay Ellis’ Spinoff
Per Hawley and the people involved in The Rookie: North, character crossovers will be established early on in the series. Fillion’s Nolan will appear in the premiere, while both Eric Winter and Melissa O’Neil will reprise their flagship roles as Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen later in the spinoff’s freshman run. Considering the fact that The Rookie: North films in Vancouver, BC to mimic the look and feel of the greater Seattle area, while the original series shoots in California, it’s clear that ABC and Hawley are making an effort to establish a connection between the shows.
This was partly due to a hard-learned lesson from The Rookie‘s first spinoff — The Rookie: Feds. The 2022 series on ABC followed the same premise as its parent series, with Niecy Nash-Betts’ Simone Clark joining the titular bureau later than most. Unfortunately, The Rookie: Feds was cancelled after just one season. Despite getting mostly positive reviews, it struggled with viewership. Since the flagship and its first spinoff were both set in Los Angeles, the two teams working on a single case should have been easy, but characters crossing over between the projects felt just like glorified cameos, with barely any compelling narrative to justify them.
Logistically, it’s more difficult to come up with ways to do a crossover between The Rookie and The Rookie: North. Despite that, there’s a clear initiative to tie the flagship and upcoming offshoot together. Because of their respective story and production locations, any type of crossover demands better narrative planning and a stronger reason to converge, which is a better way of handling this new world-building endeavor. Behind the camera, there’s also a conscious effort to incorporate Ellis into The Rookie world, as he joined major promotional activities for the main show to spread the word about his new series.
The Rookie & The Rookie: North Still Need A Proper Crossover
Seeing Nolan, Chen, and Bradford in The Rookie: North, and Alex in the flagship early during the spinoff’s run is a great way to establish a connection. That said, even if their involvement in whatever is happening in Pierce County Police Department and Holland in Mid-Wilshire is better-thought-out, ABC still needs to stage a proper crossover between the shows — one thing that The Rookie never had with The Rookie: Feds. This means that people aren’t only crossing over between the shows, but there’s an actual cohesive narrative running through them that involves the rest of the main cast.
One Chicago has done this several times over the years, with their 2025 version arguably the best one yet. Admittedly, it would require intricate planning, both in terms of narrative and logistics, considering the situation of each show, but The Rookie is one of ABC’s biggest hits. It’s also their best shot at this point to establish a new franchise. Seeing the two shows come together for a massive special crossover will not only be great in terms of gaining more visibility for The Rookie: North, but also offer the original show’s fans something new to look forward to.
