Julianne Moore to Lead Mother-Daughter Comedy at Netflix

After a string of dramatic roles, Oscar winner Julianne Moore is walking toward the light as executive producer and star of a new Netflix comedy film.

The untitled project hails from Higher Ground, the production venture founded by Barack and Michelle Obama. It’s described as a multi-generational story in the vein of “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” and follows a mother (Moore) who panics when her daughter is offered a promotion that would take her across the country. Desperate, she kicks into overdrive trying to find the ideal romantic partner to keep her daughter at home.

The ensemble piece is a “four-hander,” per one insider, and casting will get underway for the three remaining roles in the coming days. The film’s script is from Maggie Sheridan, who most recently served as executive story editor on the third season of Apple and Universal Television’s “Loot,” led by Maya Rudolph. Prior to “Loot,” she worked under acclaimed writer-producer Alan Yang (“Master of None”).

Higher Ground’s Anikah McLaren is producing the comedy with Moore on board as EP. This film is the latest collaboration between the streamer and the Obamas, who enjoy a first-look arrangement at Netflix. Additional titles include the upcoming “All the Sinners Bleed” and “The Altruists.”

Moore’s recent credits include the delicious, subversive black comedy “May December” from Todd Haynes; “The Room Next Door,” which marked Pedro Almodóvar’s first-ever English-language film; and “Echo Valley” from “Mare of Easttown” creator Brad Ingelsby. She’ll next be seen in Tom Ford’s highly anticipated third feature film, “Cry to Heaven.”

Moore is represented by WME, Entertainment 360 and Edelstein, Laird & Sobel. Sheridan is with WME and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis.

The Netflix film team has been hot for high-concept romantic comedies lately, announcing projects like an untitled culture-clash love story from Blackpink’s Lisa and “The White Lotus” producer Dave Bernad. They’ve also got a body-swap romance in the style of Jennifer Garner’s classic “13 Going on 30,” starring Emily Bader, and a Berlanti/Schechter film on deck described as “Legally Blonde” meets “War of the Roses.”
