Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel’s Armageddon!
Marvel just revealed its next Avengers roster, and while it’s a stacked lineup of mostly familiar faces, the team’s tagline doesn’t bode well for the characters who aren’t announced for the team. This version of the Avengers are “Earth’s Mightiest Survivors,” implying that the body count for Marvel’s upcoming Armageddon event is going to be even higher than expected.
Marvel officially confirmed that its flagship Avengers series is relaunching this fall in the aftermath of Armageddon. The ongoing title will be written by Chip Zdarsky, the architect of Armageddon. It will feature art by Marco Checchetto. The creative team’s Avengers #1 is coming in November, after Armageddon wreaks havoc on the Marvel Universe through the summer and into the fall.
The series is set to star Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, and Daredevil. Curiously, Marvel did hold back the name of one of “Earth’s Mightiest Survivors.” That’s because it is a hero readers haven’t met yet, who is “set to make their explosive debut soon.”
Beyond that, the announcement effectively paints a target on every other Marvel hero’s back heading into Armageddon. Marvel has been teasing the crossover as its biggest storyline in 20 years, and a major paradigm shift for all its heroes, but now, more than ever, it seems like that’s going to mean saying goodbye to some iconic characters.
