The Expanse Franchise Officially Returns In 2027 For A New Era

Based on the series of novels of the same name by James S. A. Corey, The Expanse was a hit show that premiered from 2015 to 2022. However, after it was unceremoniously canceled after just three seasons by Syfy, it was later picked up by Amazon, even continuing for a further three seasons under new leadership, which just goes to show the amount of love it had behind it.

Set in a future where humanity has colonized the Solar System, it follows a group of ragtag heroes as they travel across the galaxy and find themselves at the center of a conspiracy that could unravel the peace of the entire system. However, with United Nations Security Council member Chrisjen Avasarala, ship’s officer James Holden, and cynical detective Josephus Miller at the helm, it is their growing bonds that may just save them.

Now, four years on from the ending of the hit show, The Expanse is set to return in a thrilling new era that begins in 2027. The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is an upcoming action RPG from Owlcat Games and, as you can probably expect, it is set in the beloved sci-fi universe.

Set for launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, it serves as a continuation of the television series, whilst offering its very own original story.

Based on the events of the original book series, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn will task players with taking on the role of a customizable commander of the Pinkwater Security mercenary squad who must manage controlling a space frigate as well as fighting for survival across the galaxy itself. As the official synopsis reads:

By the 24th century, humanity has conquered the cosmos. However, life has remained anything but easy. In The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a story-driven sci-fi Action RPG, you play as a Pinkwater Security mercenary whose brief shore leave on the asteroid Eros spirals out of control. Trapped in a deadly lockdown and drawn into a solar system-wide conspiracy far beyond your control, you’ll have to adapt, survive, taking command of the most advanced ship in the whole of the solar system.

As mentioned, in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, you will be able to customize your own commander by choosing from an Earther, Martian, or Belter, and it will be your job to lead a crew of specialists in a series of missions. Much like the Mass Effect franchise, you will choose which of your crewmates you will take onto the field, but the ones left behind will also play a pivotal role, by providing much-needed information about the battlefield and your enemies.

Your companions are more than just mission assets — they are people with their own scars and loyalties. Some chase redemption. Others hide their truths. Over time, your relationships will flourish or deteriorate depending on the choices you make and how you choose to lead. The ship becomes your home — a place where trust is earned, not given.
