The fifth and final season of The Bear picks up the morning after Carmy’s bombshell decision to walk away from the restaurant, a drastic step he had to take in order to make peace not only with Richie and Syd, but to address his own personal demons.
For Richie and Syd, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime, but with Cicero relentlessly pressing home his pledge to shutter this sinkhole of a business once and for all, it’s also a poisoned chalice. Those Jono Pandolfi plates don’t seem quite so vital now.
Although the spectre of Mikey has been constant throughout the show’s previous four seasons, Carmy’s impending journey of personal discovery coupled with the events of Gary potentially hint at a breakthrough. The special flashback episode showed that there wasn’t much more that Richie could have done to help his best friend, and in fact Mikey may have scuppered his shot at happiness with Tiff.
Just as the business couldn’t possibly have survived with Carmy and Richie acting as diametrically opposed dictators, Ebraheim showed that The Bear, both symbolically and literally, can’t exist without The Beef. Will they finally earn that Michelin star? Will it make a blind bit of difference?
