Supergirl Officially Reinvents Green Lantern Lore With New Lantern Team

[

DC reveals an unprecedented team of power-ring-wielding heroes that defy the traditions of the Green Lanterns. The emotional spectrum dictates a fascinating variety of recruitment methodologies across the various Lantern Corps, with each faction seeking out candidates whose psychological makeup perfectly aligns with a specific cosmic force. The Green Lantern Corps relies on autonomous, sentient AI within their power rings to scan the cosmos for individuals who possess the rare ability to overcome great fear. Meanwhile, the Sinestro Corps seeks out those who can instill great fear, and the Indigo Tribe act as a forced cosmic rehabilitation program.

Throughout the years, the dynamic of Green Lantern teams and partnerships has served as the emotional backbone of DC’s cosmic corner, from massive galactic military operations into personal street-level friendships. Within their own ranks, Earth’s Green Lanterns form protective units such as the brotherhood between John Stewart and Hal Jordan, or the younger partnership of Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz. Other team-ups include the classic unbalanced duo of Hal Jordan and Oliver Queen, and the overpowered but then-inexperienced duo of Kyle Rayner and Wally West.

The possible variations of Lantern team-ups are infinite in the DC Universe, but some heroes are so difficult to assemble that seeing them fight together only happens in certain, far-off timelines.

Several Different Lantern Corps Representatives Form A New Superhero Team

In the universe of Supergirl: Survive, Kara Zor-El and baby Kal-El are captured by Lobo and other Czarnians, who want to sell their Kryptonian blood to the highest bidder. Thankfully, Supergirl and Kal are saved by the legendary Green Lantern and Hal Jordan predecessor Abin Sur, who leads his own team of Lanterns. Oddly enough, this cosmic superhero team is composed of one Lantern from each Corps, including the Blue Lantern Saint Walker. Although they appear early on in the timeline, Abin Sur’s squad is perhaps one of the most powerful Lantern teams in DC Comics history.

Wonder Woman Is Officially DC’s Newest Green Lantern

In a shocking twist, Wonder Woman claims a famous DC hero’s Green Lantern ring and reveals she has been able to join the Corps all along.

It’s extremely difficult to assemble a team of Lanterns where each member belongs to a different Corps. While possible in theory, some Lanterns are inherently incompatible with others. Hard as they try, the Red Lanterns can’t cooperate with the rest on a long-term basis, and the Yellow Lanterns will inevitably clash with the Green Lanterns. By nature, the Orange Lanterns can’t retain the power of greed while collaborating with other Corps, otherwise they’d be betraying their own philosophy and rejecting the fuel of their powers. Supergirl: Survive hints at the team’s collapse with the Red Lantern’s uncontrolled rampage when Saint Walker dies.

Abin Sur Was A Legend Before Hal Jordan Came Into The Picture

Abin Sur Is An Underrated Green Lantern

Before his rings passed to Hal Jordan, Abin Sur of Space Sector 2814 was one of the most revered figures in the history of the Green Lantern Corps. Abin Sur patroled his massive cosmic territory with an unrivaled sense of diplomatic grace, earning the respect of both the Guardians of the Universe and his fellow peacekeepers. He was a close friend to legendary figures like Thaal Sinestro, back when Sinestro was still considered the Corps’ greatest champion. Abin Sur fought on the front lines of brutal conflicts against cosmic horrors like the Empire of Tears, and his legendary exploits across the stars built a reputation for incorruptibility.

Abin Sur’s willingness to peer into the darkest secrets of the universe to protect the future made him stand out in the Green Lantern Corps. While the Guardians strictly forbade the mapping of forbidden prophecies, Abin Sur defied their censorship to investigate a cosmic apocalypse foretold by the demons of the dead zone of Ysmault. This forbidden knowledge ultimately inspired Abin Sur to travel stealthily in a physical starship, and the rest is history. Now, Supergirl: Survive expands the legend with the incredible feat of assembling a rainbow Lantern team, if only temporarily.
