Star Trek’s 3 Versions Of James T. Kirk Ranked

When Star Trek first hit screens in 1966, it wasn’t just the debut of one of the most iconic starships in sci-fi history. The crew of the Enterprise became just as symbolic and synonymous with the genre as the ship itself. However, none had the impact on how sci-fi stories were told post-Star Trek: The Original Series like William Shatner’s Captain James T. Kirk.

The Captain Kirk of Star Trek: The Original Series wasn’t just an iconic starship captain. He redefined how starship captains have been portrayed ever since. Every starfaring character of a similar rank in sci-fi movies and TV shows that arrived after Star Trek: TOS has either channeled shades of Kirk or was deliberately trying not to be like him as much as possible.

Kirk left an indelible mark on an entire sci-fi character archetype, and it’s all thanks to William Shatner’s inimitable performance. However, in the years since Star Trek: The Original Series concluded, two more actors have donned the uniform of the Enterprise’s most universally recognized captain, and the debate around which Kirk is supreme continues to rage on.

Paul Wesley (2022-Present)

Paul Wesley’s take on James T. Kirk is the newest interpretation of the iconic Star Trek captain, and in many ways this version of the character is still developing. Wesley first appeared as Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, playing a younger version who has not yet taken command of the USS Enterprise. Still, while still finding its feet, the Strange New Worlds version of Kirk is also one of the more distinct, as Wesley gets to portray the man before he fully becomes the legend.

Playing Kirk earlier in the timeline is a key way that Paul Wesley has been able to put his own subtle stamp on the character. His Kirk is confident and charismatic, but he also carries the uncertainty of inexperience and youth. However, he already has the sharp intelligence and natural authority that define Kirk by the time he takes the captain’s chair, albeit with a slightly more playful edge. This is a Kirk still finding his place within Starfleet, and Paul Wesley portrays him incredibly well.

However, as well as he is acted and as unique as he is, Paul Wesley’s Kirk debuted in 2022 and hasn’t been around that long. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is still ongoing, and Wesley is still establishing the character. For now, Wesley’s iteration of the future Enterprise captain feels like an intriguing expansion of Kirk’s history rather than a defining interpretation. It’s far, far from a bad take on Kirk, but it’s also one that still needs time to mature.

Chris Pine (2009-2016)

The second actor to ever portray Captain Kirk (outside younger versions in flashbacks) was Chris Pine, who took up the mantle in the J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek movie, which takes place in the alternate Kelvin timeline. From Star Trek through to Into Darkness and Beyond, Chris Pine took Kirk from an impulsive young officer to a captain forced to reckon with the responsibilities of commanding a starship.

Across the three movies, Chris Pine’s Kirk became the face of a new generation of Star Trek. What’s more, Pine managed to make his version of James Tiberius Kirk unique without losing the essence of what made William Shatner’s performance so iconic. His Kirk is more reckless and emotionally volatile than both Shatner’s and Paul Wesley’s. However, Pine doesn’t dilute Kirk’s defining qualities like his intelligence, courage, and charm. It may be the Kirk of a different timeline, but it is still unmistakably the same captain of the Enterprise that William Shatner played in Star Trek: TOS.

Perhaps the only reason Chris Pine’s take on James T. Kirk isn’t as widely embraced by fans of the Star Trek TV shows is that the limited runtime of a movie trilogy didn’t give him enough opportunity to flesh out the character in the same way William Shatner was able to. Despite this, Chris Pine should be commended for delivering a terrific modern interpretation of the classic sci-fi character, making it his own without losing sight of the legacy he was building upon.

William Shatner (1966-1994)

William Shatner’s James T. Kirk is the best version of the Enterprise captain, and few Star Trek fans would argue otherwise. Shatner first played Kirk in Star Trek: The Original Series, which ran from 1966 to 1969, before reprising the role in Star Trek: The Animated Series and seven Star Trek movies, beginning with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979 and concluding with Star Trek: Generations in 1994. Across nearly three decades, Shatner transformed Kirk from a sci-fi TV show character into a pop culture icon.

The Captain Kirk of Star Trek: The Original Series continues to be influential despite the show ending over 50 years ago, and it’s thanks to the sheer range of qualities William Shatner brought to the role. Kirk could be a fearless commander, a passionate romantic, a brilliant strategist, and a deeply thoughtful explorer (and often he’d wear all these hats within a single episode). Shatner gave him a theatrical intensity that perfectly suited Star Trek: TOS, but his Kirk also never felt inauthentic. Audiences were never in doubt that they were watching a captain who genuinely carried the weight of his crew’s lives.

Chris Pine and Paul Wesley have each delivered highly entertaining versions of the character, but William Shatner is and always will be the definitive Captain Kirk. Everything fans love about Kirk, from his confidence and charisma to his restrained temper and simmering intensity, came directly from the first actor to play him. More importantly, while Pine and Wesley did incredibly well, Shatner is the Kirk who made the commander of the Enterprise a character that didn’t just influence the future of Star Trek, but the entire sci-fi genre.
