The new Apple TV’s fantasy adaptation that looks as though it could rival major hits such as Game of Thrones has already broken a curse that many installments in the genre – and the series in question itself – end up facing at some point in their development process. The world of fantasy is one of the most rich and potential-filled genres in the entire ecosystem of media, though this ample potential also comes with its own share of issues.
With so many amazing fantasy books to choose from, plans for adaptations are a frequent event, but also are frequently stymied, put on indefinite hold, or canceled altogether because of the challenges that arise from bringing these detailed and larger-than-life series from the inked page to life on screen. It’s not hard to see why, either, since fantasy often has serious demands when it comes to adaptations – be that in terms of budget, in terms of graphical effects, or in terms of actor performances from those who play a part in these worlds.
While one of the latest and most promising fantasy adaptations still has a long way to go when it comes to the production process, the early updates we’ve gotten about the Apple TV fantasy release paint a genuinely promising picture of what’s to come, even if the road likely isn’t a short one – with one of the most promising being the way this update breaks a previous curse this franchise has faced for quite some time.
Brandon Sanderson’s Apple TV Mistborn Adaptation Is Already Breaking The Development Hell Curse Common For Fantasy Series
Brandon Sanderson recently revealed he has finished the first draft for the Apple TV movie adaptation of his book series Mistborn, marking a major milestone for the project and its development. This is an exciting detail to note for a fair few reasons, with one of the most key being this marks a six-month turnaround between the first announcements that Apple TV had landed the rights to Sanderson’s wider Cosmere universe, which is a major contrast to the prior setup the Mistborn series saw itself in.
Previously, plans were made in 2016 for the Mistborn series to be adapted by DMG Entertainment, only for these plans to fall through some time before the end of 2023, when Sanderson announced that the project was on hold in his updates about the wider franchise (via YouTube).
Given many fantasy projects end up in indefinite stasis – because of the complexities around rights, and because of the intricacies of the franchises and often the budget they would ideally need making them more complex adaptation options – seeing Mistborn revived and making some seemingly quick progress for now bodes well for the current plans for a film rendition.
Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn Movie Is A Perfect Adaptation Choice Given Fantasy’s History On-Screen
Historically, the two things audiences tend to resonate with most when it comes to fantasy adaptations are a sense of believability when it comes to a franchise’s larger-than-life elements, and a level of nuanced detail that makes a world feel lived in and deep enough for audiences to get lost in it.
While the Mistborn series is different to Game of Thrones in a lot of ways, the appeal of the two beloved fantasy universes are in many ways the same, with them sharing a penchant for complex and engaging geopolitical conflicts, and having a more grounded overall approach to magic – since the series follows a hard magic system, wherein clear limits are shown for various powers.
In effect, Mistborn combines the appeal of more low-fantasy series like Game of Thrones, and fantasy series that draw heavily on their larger-than-life aspects like Lord of the Rings or Avatar: The Last Airbender, meaning the franchise’s impending movie adaptation is a seriously exciting prospect, particularly now it seems progress is once again being made.
