Google says its new Genie 4 model is a ‘key stepping stone’ to AGI — but creating convincing fake worlds doesn’t mean AI understands the real one

Google has unveiled an AI model that can create entire interactive worlds, complete with realistic environments that respond to what people do inside them. Genie 4 is an extraordinary piece of technology, capable of generating experiences that would have seemed almost impossible just a few years ago. Unfortunately, Google seems incapable of announcing an impressive AI achievement without dragging artificial general intelligence (AGI) into the conversation.

“The ability to explore an unlimited range of realistic environments is a key stepping stone on the path to AGI,” the company declared in its rollout. “Training and testing AI agents in truer-to-life environments brings us closer to their successful deployment in the physical world.”
