Rather than revisiting familiar battles like the new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series or focusing on dream Ranger teams like Power Rangers Unlimited, the new Power Rangers: Green comic jumps into a bleak alternate future where Tommy has retired after becoming the last Ranger left alive. Living quietly with Alpha and his adopted family, Tommy is forced back into action when an unexpected visitor arrives asking for help.

That visitor is Goldar, one of Tommy’s oldest enemies and a staple of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers era of the TV show. The fearsome warrior sees Tommy’s assistance instead of trying to destroy him, immediately turning one of the franchise’s longest rivalries on its head. Goldar himself has changed dramatically, sporting a battered new design that reflects years of survival in this ruined future.

The alliance is particularly compelling because Tommy and Goldar were once Rita Repulsa’s two greatest weapons and rivals for her approval. One reason BOOM! Studios’ Power Rangers comics have earned such a passionate following is how effectively they deepen the characters for the TV show. Tommy has perhaps benefited the most, with stories like Shattered Grid, Soul of the Dragon, and now Power Rangers: Green exploring emotional conflicts and mature themes that the TV series, which was always aimed primarily at younger audiences, couldn’t really touch.

No character, however, has received a greater reinvention than Goldar, even compared to the original Green Ranger himself.
