‘The Diplomat’ Renewed for Season 5 at Netflix

The Diplomat has been renewed for a fifth season at Netflix.

The news, announced Thursday, comes after season four ended with a dramatic scene at the G7 summit, raising questions about the careers of a number of the series’ long-term civil servants.

The closing moments of the season finale featured Rufus Sewell‘s vice president Hal Wyler getting ready to address a group of reporters, saying merely “good morning” before the scene cut to black.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter tied to The Diplomat‘s fourth season, ahead of the renewal, stars Sewell, Allison Janney and Keri Russell were hopeful they’d get to find out what happens to their characters.

“What’s the culmination of this behavior and what she’s doing?,” Janney wondered aloud of her president Grace Penn, who makes some aggressive foreign policy moves in season four. “Is she going to resign? What does she do? What the hell is going to happen if we get to another season?”

Five seasons is a relatively long run in the streaming era but The Diplomat creator and showrunner Debora Cahn recently told THR that she’s not yet nearing the end of this tale.

“I grew up in broadcast television, where one season was 22, sometimes 25, episodes, so it feels like we’re just getting started,” the West Wing and Grey’s Anatomy alum said. “It doesn’t feel to me like we’re in season four. It feels like we’re in the juicy middle.”

After hitting Netflix on Oct. 15, The Diplomat‘s eight-episode fourth season reached No. 3 on Netflix’s global top 10 list in its second week and landed in the top 10 in 63 countries.

Though Netflix renewed The Diplomat just two weeks after its most recent season debuted, the streamer had previously renewed the series for its third and fourth seasons before the second and third seasons had aired. And the show was swiftly renewed for a second season just 11 days after its first season premiered.

In addition to Russell, Sewell and Janney, the Diplomat‘s fourth season starred Bradley Whitford, Ato Essandoh, Jodie Whittaker, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah.

Cahn and Russell serve as executive producers on the series alongside Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie.

For their work in season three, Russell won SAG-AFTRA’s Actor Award for best actress in a drama series and Janney won an Emmy for best supporting actress in a drama series. Throughout its four seasons, The Diplomat has been nominated for multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, Critics Choice, SAG-AFTRA Producers Guild and Writers Guild awards.
