Stars may be listening as A Court of Thorns and Roses may have hope for the future.
A Court of Thorns and Roses is a fantasy/romance novel series featuring six books with more on the horizon and has completely taken over bestselling lists with each release of a new addition. The franchise follows Feyre Archeron and her family as she’s abducted to the magical realm of Prythian for killing a faerie wolf. The mortal huntress finds herself entrapped by deadly politics, epic wars, and high-stakes romance that could change everything.
In a report by Puck News, author Sarah J. Maas is apparently shopping around for another studio to adapt her bestselling novels after Hulu’s rights to the franchise have officially expired. The news comes after Rebecca Yarros’ adaptation of her novel Fourth Wing is moving ahead at Amazon with star Michael B. Jordan attached. It’s unclear which studio Maas will be approaching, but even with Outlander‘s Ron Moore attached as showrunner, Hulu’s fumble spells trouble for the iconic romantasy series.
Reports suggested Hulu were not prepared for the budget required to adapt ACOTAR due to its need for CGI as it is mainly set in a fantasy realm. However, there is still hope for the fantasy novels as more and more adaptations of fan-favorite series are being made, including Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty and Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton. Not all adaptations have been successful, as Netflix’s fantasy series Shadow & Bone based on Leigh Bardugo’s novels was abruptly cancelled after two seasons on Netflix.
Despite this, the want and desire by fans for adaptations of their favorite novels remains unwavering, especially for Maas’s bestselling series, which is returning with two more novels: ACOTAR 6, which is releasing on October 27, and ACOTAR 7, releasing on January 12, 2027. Maas has yet to reveal hints on what the future novels could be about, but fans are already theorising that the character Feyre’s sister Elain could be the focus.
Amazon could be Maas’s best bet for A Court of Thorns and Roses adaptation as they have a good resume of fantasy adaptations already made with some on the horizon. The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time have both been successful and large-scale fantasy series, with Rings of Power returning for a third season. Especially now Yarros’s Fourth Wing is being adapted, it’s a possibility ACOTAR could find its new home.
