Netflix seems to have the crime drama market cornered right now. It’s only been a few weeks since the streamer dropped I Will Find You — the gripping miniseries that dominated conversation at Fourth of July events around the country — and now it has another highly-anticipated show coming up soon. The Undertow began filming in May of 2024, and after two years of anticipation, the series is expected sometime at the end of 2026, or perhaps early 2027. By all accounts, this will be another must-see series, with all the lies and conspiracies crime fiction fans have come to expect from Netflix.
The Undertow is based on a Norwegian series called Twin. This American remake will star Jamie Dornan as the titular twins, Adam and Leo, along with Mackenzie Davis as Nicola and Mabel Strachan as Sophie. Iain De Caestecker and Gary Lewis have also been cast in unnamed roles. According to Netflix, the series is about Adam and Nicola struggling in a loveless marriage when the return of Leo upends their world. More details should be coming soon as Netflix’s projected release date looms nearer.
‘The Undertow’ Fits In With Netflix’s Biggest Success Stories
Netflix is best known to most subscribers for its big blockbuster hits such as Stranger Things and Squid Game, but beyond that, the streamer takes a lot of criticism in fandom forums online. Many feel that Netflix doesn’t give original shows enough time to find their audiences, but that’s exactly why these kinds of crime dramas are its biggest strength.
I Will Find You is a perfect example — the eight-episode series unravels a murder mystery with impeccable pacing, leaving audiences feeling like they really experienced all the suspense the story had to offer. I Will Find You is adapted from a novel by Harlan Coben, who served as executive producer along with Robert Hull. It stars Sam Worthington as David Burroughs, a lawyer wrongly convicted for the murder of his son, and Britt Lower as Rachel Mills, David’s former sister-in-law and a reporter intent on solving this case.
Netflix has proven time and time again that it can excel with a complex yet self-contained story like this, and by all accounts, The Undertow will be the same. The Norwegian series is known for weaving an intense web of deception around its characters, almost daring the audience to believe one thing before some contradictory evidence comes along to sway them. On top of that, the series has an all-star cast and some notable talent behind the camera as well, led by EPs Nira Park, Rachael Prior, Jeremy Lovering, Sarah Dollard, David Flynn, Paul Lee, and Dornan himself.
‘The Undertow’ Has To Live Up To ‘Twin’
As with any remake or adaptation, the pressure is on for The Undertow to do justice to the original, and Twin is a massively popular series. Released in 2019, the series starred Game of Thrones alum Kristofer Hivju as twins Adam and Erik, while Rebekka Nystabakk played Adam’s wife Ingrid. After drifting apart for over a decade, the brothers finally came together only for a horrible accident to befall them. The attempt to cover it up exposes layered secrets from the past, compounding under pressure as the story goes on.
There’s no telling what will be changed or tweaked in The Undertow, but according to a report by Good Housekeeping, some elements have already been revealed. For example, it appears that Nicola in this version has a past with Lee that she is desperate to keep under wraps. There’s also the issue of the children, who are swept along in this nightmare with the rest of the family. The leads will have to work on their poker faces as they hold their breath through a tense police investigation.
The Undertow was originally slated for release in 2025, and it’s not clear exactly why it missed that deadline. It was one of seven titles omitted from the streamer’s lineup in the year’s final quarterly update. However, it was included in Next on Netflix 2026, implying that we will see it by the end of this year. Netflix UK has also given several hints that it will be coming soon. A more substantial update could be coming any time now, including a first trailer to give us a glimpse of Dorner pulling double duty on screen.
Anticipation is building, and there could be news on The Undertow at any moment. After the success of I Will Find You and other series like it, fans are clearly looking forward to Netflix’s unique brand of crime dramas. For now, I Will Find You is streaming on Netflix in the U.S. Twin is available on Apple TV in the U.S., but it was flimed in Norwegian. It can be watched with English subtitles, or with an English dub.
