Bold, experimental sci-fi storytelling was facing slow, painful death on television. While some of the most ambitious sci-fi shows were canceled after a season or two, the ones that lasted long enough barely broke new ground. This is when Apple TV stepped up its sci-fi game. After a few hits and misses, the streaming service delivered one brilliant sci-fi show after another.
Even Apple TV’s record of green-lighting sci-fi shows for new seasons is getting so increasingly impressive that it almost seems like a broken traffic light, unable to hit “red” and “yellow.” With its upcoming adaptation of a seminal sci-fi book, Apple TV is further leveling up its catalog. The streaming service is not only taking a massive risk but also making sci-fi history.
Based on William Gibson’s iconic cyberpunk novel, Apple TV’s Neuromancer is easily one of its most exciting shows. The highly influential sci-fi book was written over four decades ago in 1984. Yet, sci-fi fans have had to wait till 2027 to finally see its first big budget adaptation. It is, indeed, a golden time to be a cyberpunk sci-fi fan.
Apple TV Is Making History By Adapting The “Unadaptable”
William Gibson’s Neuromancer is not an easy read. The author almost adopts a techno-poetic style where he merges hard-boiled noir with surrealism. The book’s famous opening line itself is incredibly moody, evocative, and open to interpretation:
“The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”
The book also drops readers directly into its “high-tech, low life” world without easing them into it. With no explanation, it introduces novel concepts like “cyberspace cowboy,” “simstims,” and “microsofts,” among others. Translating text that expects viewers to do so much thinking and draw contextual assumptions almost seems impossible.
Especially in a two-hour movie, the story will either have to feature a lot of exposition or completely strip away the book’s original linguistic appeal. This explains why, even though many big screen Neuromancer adaptations were planned in the past, none saw the light of day.
Fortunately, for Apple TV, the streaming service is adapting the book for the small screen. That, too, will prove challenging. However, it, at least, leaves enough room for the story to breathe and realize the full potential of the themes and ideas in the book.
Neuromancer also features an intriguing protagonist, Case, who is not as dynamic and proactive as conventional heroes. He is a desperate, drug-addicted hacker whose only drive to work comes from his desire to be able to interface with cyberspace again. Put simply, he is more Cypher from The Matrix than Neo.
The book’s perspective also shifts between Case’s internal monologue, a female cyborg’s physical sensory input, and the neon geometry of “the Matrix.” Capturing this on the screen, along with Neuromancer’s post-human themes and portrayal of complex AI, was never going to be an easy feat for adaptations. Yet, Apple TV has taken it upon itself to create history by adapting Neuromancer.
Neuromancer Is A Strange Adaptation That’ll Compete With Own Cyberpunk Legacy
It is almost a cruel paradox that, before Neuromancer‘s adaptation saw the light of day, movies and shows inspired by it became massive sci-fi hits. Everything from The Matrix to Ghost in the Shell, from Cyberpunk 2077 to System Shock, has drawn from the seminal cyberpunk novel. William Gibson’s Neuromancer was miles ahead of its time when it was first published, explaining why it became so influential.
After over four decades, however, its direct adaptation risks feeling derivative because so many movies, shows, games, and books have rehashed its ideas and concepts.
Interestingly, though, Apple TV has an established history of bringing a modern spin to classic literature with its adaptations and still making them work. The streaming service’s Foundation is nothing like the Isaac Asimov books. Yet, it is one of the best sci-fi shows of our time. Apple TV’s Silo, too, has gone through many major book changes, but it remains one of its best sci-fi IPs.
Even with Neuromancer, Apple TV is expected to achieve the impossible and make sci-fi history by delivering an adaptation that will keep cyberpunk fans talking for decades.
