Apple TV’s Stephen King-Approved Crime Thriller Season 2 Story Teased By Creator

[

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed season 1, episode 10, “Queens.”Season 2 story details are revealed for the Stephen King-approved crime thriller Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed.

In the Apple TV series, Tatiana Maslany plays Paula Sanders, whose investigation into a scam leads to the discovery of a much larger conspiracy. On social media, King has praised the show on numerous occasions, first calling it “very entertaining,” then hailing it as “even better” than Widow’s Bay, and as if “Hitchcock came back to do it one more time.” In regard to Maslany’s performance, he said, “Whatever they’re paying her, it’s not enough.”

During an interview with Gold Derby, creator David J. Rosen teases season 2’s potential story. He addressed whether Brian (Adam Huber) is the show’s true overaching villain, hinting that the character is still only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the corporate conspiracy. Check out his comments below:

The beauty and the horror of the corporate world we live in is: “Is there ever one big bad?” They’re obviously doing something and making some gray market moves in the world of consultancy. Brian could be calling Cecilia Vanderalle (Nina Arianda) or it could be someone else within the corporation. He’s the point of contact with the outside — and plausibly deniable — consultants that get them what they need.

Paula retains shared custody of her daughter, Hazel (Nola Wallace), in the season 1 finale, is cleared of all criminal charges against her, and has a date set up with Steve (Raymond Lee). Despite the blackmail that comes at the end of the episode, Rosen indicates that the positive developments mean more happiness and wins for her in season 2.

Paula will have more happiness in her life; I can’t say from where or how. She’s done so much and accomplished so much that I don’t think she ever thought she could have before, and that leads up to her almost being able to have that moment with Steve. If we do Season 2, there will be more wins for her.

In an interview with Variety, Rosen builds on the reveal of the footage that shows Paula deliberately ran over her neighbor in Portland and it wasn’t an accident after all. He emphasizes it as a “reframing” of the series and that there are important events leading up to the incident that the audience hasn’t seen yet.

I always intended it to be a reframing. We’ve felt Paula is a reliable narrator, but we feel moments of unreliability. As Karl says over and over, she’s eccentric, acting in a way that’s not consistent. The audience is like, Screw you, Karl! She’s going through a lot right now! But what we come to realize in the end is that something more was afoot. Paula is more complicated than we thought.

Paula, at the beginning of this series, is reaching out, in this epidemic of loneliness that we’re living in, for a tiny bit of happiness. It launches her into this modern-day Rear Window through her computer. But what we realize at the end of it all is that it wasn’t just Poor Paula, look what’s happened to you — she is complicit, a little bit, in her own undoing.

We’re all more complex than what we put out there, and I don’t think we know, essentially, what went on in Portland. That remains to be discovered. We’re being given the footage that is out there, but we need to understand more about the story. We’ve seen her drive home, but we don’t know what’s happened in the days and weeks prior.

I believe we can agree that there is some sort of past between them. We don’t know what the relationship is based on. We don’t know what the anger is about. I look at it like when you’re on Reddit and you’re like, That neighbor is such an asshole — she deserved everything that came to her. Then some comment buried way down is like, If you read the whole story, she’s been pushed to the brink for years by this other person.

Beyond Paula and the conspiracy, there is the matter of what will happen between her friends and co-workers Rudy (Charlie Hall) and Geri (Kiarra Hamagami Goldberg). While Rudy says he and his ex, Vi, are getting back together, Rosen suggests that it may not be as straightforward as it seems, meaning there may still be hope for a romantic relationship between him and Geri.

[When Rudy tells Geri he’s back with his ex,] I don’t know whether or not Rudy and Vi are actually back together, or whether he, in the moment, was like, “Oh my God, there’s so much pressure.” That’s an answer that I look forward to getting into.

Meanwhile, Paula’s ex-husband, Karl (Jake Johnson), and his wife Mallory (Jessy Hodges), were unable to get full custody of Hazel, but this doesn’t mean their planned move to Boise, Idaho is off the table now: “I don’t think Boise is dead; I think Boise is out there. Karl and Mallory have a lot to work out right now, and, weirdly, the weight that’s been on Paula’s shoulders — how are you going to live your life if you lose custody? — has now completely shifted onto them.”

Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed season 2 has not been renewed yet, but Rosen tells Gold Derby that he and the creative team are proud of what they accomplished and optimistic about the future: “We’re crossing our fingers. Our creative crew is really happy with the reception that we’ve gotten. We’ve just been so lucky with how people have been talking about the show. I’m sure Apple has a lot of math that they do as they get to these last few episodes, but we’re knocking wood and crossing fingers.”

Another storyline that requires follow-up in a potential season 2 is Detective Gonzalez (Dolly de Leon) and Detective Baxter (Jon Michael Hill) looking further into the conspiracy. Between Baxter being shot, the body of Dennis (Murray Bartlett) being found and everything being pinned on him, and the woman who pretended to be Paula’s lawyer in prison, there is plenty that still doesn’t add up. The investigation will become more complicated if the detectives learn the truth of what transpired in Portland or how Paula is now being blackmailed by the footage from that night.

As for the show’s reception beyond King, Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed has a “Certified Fresh” 93% critics’ score and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. On streaming, it has performed particularly well in the United States, where it is number five on the charts as of this writing, and has remained in the top 10 for 56 consecutive days.

All episodes of Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed season 1 are streaming on Apple TV.
