Following the same traditions as the earliest entries in the series, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced brings back the crafting and upgrade systems from the original Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, with a few adjustments that returning players will have to get used to. While the systems remain fundamentally unchanged, the specific materials you’ll need to upgrade Kenway’s gear have been shuffled around quite a bit from the original game.
Given how massive the map of Black Flag Resynced is even without being expanded from the original game, it can also be a bit hard to keep track of where each and every huntable animal is across its numerous islands. While it will still require a bit of effort to acquire them, knowing where to start and even collecting materials beforehand can save you plenty of headaches down the line.
Every Equipment Upgrade In Assassin’s Creed Black Flag
While you can just go out and find each animal as you slowly progress through Black Flag Resynced and its various equipment upgrades, many of them are locked behind story-related content for the first sections of the game. That doesn’t mean you can’t start collecting early, however, as having the materials before you get the Darts and Pistol-related upgrades means you won’t have to wait nearly as long to unlock their full potential.
Below you’ll find a list of every material and several of the locations where each huntable animal spawns, with the ones that are most easily accessible or share a location with other animals highlighted in bold for easier reference.

While you’ll unlock the pistol upgrades quite early on after the introduction of Black Flag Resynced, if you’re wondering when you’ll get some of the later abilities, you’ll have to wait until Sequence 3 to get access to The Rope Dart, which is a brand-new addition to the game that wasn’t in the original Black Flag.
The Sleeping and Berserk Darts are a bit further into the story comparatively, with the equipment and associated upgrades only being available after completing Sequence 4 and reaching Tulum, during the mission “Overrun and Outnumbered.” After reaching this stage of the story, the only thing left between you and the rest of the games upgrade being the materials required to craft them.
How To Farm Huntable Animals In Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resycned
While Black Flag Resynced already has handy icons on each island to show you not only which animals you’ll find and exactly where, you won’t always get lucky enough to hunt all the materials you need in one go. Whether you need more materials than there are animals available, or you manage to spook off some of the more frightful ones, you can easily generate more with one simple trick.
To reset animal spawns, all you need to do is fast travel to another location before going back to the same hunting spot. Thankfully, one of the best changes from Black Flag in the remake is that there is no longer a loading screen when swapping between your ship and islands, making the process a bit easier if the animals can be found close to the coastline.
Sometimes animal spots seem to not respawn even after fast traveling to other locations, so you should try other hunting spots before coming back to get them to reset.
While you can do this at just about any island, I would definitely recommend focussing on hunting in larger hubs like Nassau, Havana, Great Iguana, Tulum, Kingston, and other major cities that have several animal spawns each, which you can track using the chart listed above to make sure you get all the materials you need in far fewer trips than doing so one by one on smaller islands.
Although it might be tempting to sell off any extra animal skins you come across in Black Flag Resynced after finishing Edward’s upgrades, there are a number of shop purchases that require you to trade in a certain amount of skins on top of your hard-earned gold, making it best to hold onto any extra hides until you’re sure you won’t need them anymore.
Where To Buy Animal Hides In Black Flag Resycned
It isn’t just physically hunting for yourself that can net you animal hides, however, as you can also trade for them using the bones of other animals at a general store. For each land animal you kill, you’ll get one bone that can be exchanged for animal pelts, which usually go for about 3 to 5 per pelt, depending on the rarity of the animal.
You’ll only be able to buy a limited selection of pelts at the start of Black Flag Resynced, however, as you’ll need to upgrade the general store in Great Inagua in order to gain access to every pelt in the game, with each successive upgrade allowing you to purchase more more and more exotic materials until all are available at level 3.
Upgrading the fisherman’s Wharf at Great Inagua will double the amount of skins gathered from sea animals.
While this seems far easier than farming for all the animals on paper, I wouldn’t recommend using trading bones as your primary means of upgrding Edward’s gear, as the limited resource is far harder to acquire and can instead be put towards rare ship items that use them instead, as returning fans will be happy to hear that the skeletal crew armor returns in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, but requires a whopping 100 bones to purchase.
