An Avengers: Doomsday car commercial just revealed a first look at Alan Cumming’s Nightcrawler in motion – and it may have teased a surprising cameo, too.
Marvel Studios has played it safe when it comes to big reveals for next month’s all-star superhero movie. As it marks the beginning of the end of the Multiverse saga and a proper introduction for Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, it makes sense that we’ve not seen too much yet, but a new Jeep commercial is changing that.
The car brand got in on the hype with a crossover commercial for Jeep 4x4s today. While similar videos are far from a new concept, it goes the extra mile by sending its cars through an onslaught of superhero antics themed around Avengers: Doomsday. It’s not exactly footage from the movie, but between shots of Human Torch flyovers and shots of a war-torn X-Men school, Marvel did allow a first look at elements official trailers have hidden from viewers thus far.

Cumming’s Kurt Wagner, a.k.a. Nightcrawler, is one character who was announced to be in the film ages ago, but we’ve seen so little of him so far. For some reason, this Jeep commercial marks our first official look at Nightcrawler using his teleportation powers in Avengers: Doomsday since 2003’s X2. Although it’s a quick moment that shows him leaping through cars, it’s still nice to see him considered worth highlighting amongst such a jam-packed lineup of stars.
Again, it’s hard to read too much into a car commercial, but when The Thing, Thor, and Sentinels are featured so prominently, it’s also hard to ignore. So, while Nightcrawler does get the spotlight here, it makes sense that there’s little to cling to in terms of story details. Well, except for one thing.
Warning! Potential spoilers for Avengers: Doomsday follow.
Marvel fans love to dig into the details of any official communication from Marvel, and today’s Jeep commercial is no different. As the Jeeps park toward the end of the video, they return to one location via those all-too-familiar magical portals we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so many times before. From the Doctor Strange movies to Avengers: Endgame, these orange circles have offered heroes transport before. The reason this has comic book movie fans restless today is that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is one of the few heroes not confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday yet.

In fact, other magic users like Wong and Ned Leeds haven’t been confirmed to be in the cast either. As many have pointed out, there’s a decent chance this is little more than a convenient tie-in to bring the Jeep commercial’s multiverse message together. Arguments to the contrary point out that other heroes and abilities are pretty accurately represented here.
“I wonder if the Strange portals mean anything,” one Reddit user wondered.
“Will Jeep return in Avengers: Secret Wars?” another joked.
Would Marvel have included portals if they weren’t going to be featured in Avengers: Doomsday? It’s hard to say, but it’s also more Doctor Strange-like wizardry than we’ve seen in any official footage thus far. Who knows? Maybe it’s Doctor Doom who’s learned the power of the magic portals.
We’ll have to wait until Avengers: Doomsday comes to theaters December 18 to see if there’s anything to these latest MCU theories. In the meantime, you can check out Downey and Pedro Pascal’s Halloween costumes, which also happened to spark a round of theories. You can also see how a Dunkin’ ad revealed an updated accent for Channing Tatum’s Gambit.
