CBS Officially Gives Mike Colter’s New Legal Thriller a Sunday Night Takeover

[

Mike Colter might be best known as Marvel’s Luke Cage, but for much of his career, he’s called CBS home. Under creators Robert and Michelle King, he’s had three prominent roles on the Eye network, starting with their iconic Emmy-winning political legal drama The Good Wife, where he played the notorious Chicago drug kingpin, Lemond Bishop. The Kings then made him part of the main ensemble in their ambitious supernatural mystery series Evil, opposite Katja Herbers for four seasons of unraveling mysteries from the inexplicable to the downright demonic. Their latest legal thriller now has him back in the spotlight, and CBS is about to give him and Rachel Keller their biggest spotlight yet.

Cupertino has been off to a solid start on Thursday nights alongside the Kings’ other series, Elsbeth. Each week sees Michael Price (Colter) and Olivia Siffre (Keller), two lawyers cheated by Silicon Valley and fired from their jobs at a tech start-up, taking on cases with their associates at their up-and-coming firm against the goliaths of the tech industry on behalf of the people they’ve long harmed with impunity. As of its second week, the series ranked as the second-most-watched new series of the season so far, racking up 6.8 million viewers from October 12-18, according to Nielsen’s live-plus-seven-day measure. This Sunday, Price, Siffre & Associates will aim to get even more viewers into the legal action by taking over CBS for the evening.

In addition to Thursday night’s episode “Celeste,” airing at 10 p.m. ET/PT, three back-to-back episodes of Cupertino will play after 60 Minutes in place of the usually scheduled Marshals and Tracker. That includes one new episode, titled “Harper,” airing in the Yellowstone spin-off’s spot at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by re-airings of the first two episodes, “Michael & Olivia” and “Vik & Bo.” Another new episode, “Yungwood,” will then follow next Thursday, November 12. The pre-emption will use the break from the usual Sunday action slate to give other viewers a larger sample of a sci-fi legal thriller premise that critics have powered to a stellar 100%.

What’s Coming for ‘Cupertino’ Through Next Week?

“Harper” puts a high-stakes twist on the courtroom thrills when a traffic jam forces everyone involved in Michael and Olivia’s latest case to have to fight in the legal battle remotely from their cars. The case in question hits close to home for Christy (Ella Stiller), as her roommate finds herself denied a critical transplant after an AI algorithm swaps her place on the list with a wealthy man. The only hope remaining is for the lawyers to find a judge who will swiftly stop the operation from going forward, but that’s easier said than done. “Yungwood,” meanwhile, brings in a big guest star in Method Man to play the titular legendary rapper whose revenue is jeopardized by an AI-music studio generating copycats of his music. However, Michael and Olivia’s fight for art and music gets personal when Michael’s own father, Bayard (Joe Morton), takes the stand as the opposing counsel. Busy Philipps, Nik Dodani, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Rob McClure also star.

Cupertino airs tonight on CBS, with a new episode this Sunday, November 8, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by two more reruns. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on the future of the Kings’ latest hit.
