Prime Video is preparing to mount a major challenge to One Piece’s throne in 2027, as the production of its own epic fantasy adventure adaptation heads towards the home straight. Based on a huge global phenomenon which spans more than two decades in another medium, this humongous new release with an all-star cast and a whopping budget is very much in keeping with Netflix’s live-action version of Monkey D. Luffy’s story.
Not many TV series could dream of success like One Piece has achieved with its flagship adaptation, but Prime Video might just have found the fantasy franchise capable of matching it. Just as the Straw Hat Pirates had already accrued millions of dedicated fans through manga and anime releases before Netflix backed the live-action adaptation of their adventures, God of War will premiere off the back of colossal gaming success.
It will also boast an ensemble of screen talent that even One Piece must be jealous of. Dave Bautista is perfectly cast as the show’s protagonist, mythic Norse hero Kratos, while the likes of Teresa Palmer, Ed Skrein, Mandy Patinkin, and Alastair Duncan feature in supporting roles. Meanwhile, Battlestar Galactica and Outlander developer Ronald D. Moore will be running the show.
With this wealth of creative riches at its disposal, there’s every chance that God of War will be regarded as one of the best video game adaptations in TV history by the end of its first season. That’s just as well, because Prime Video has already thrown its full weight behind the series, by commissioning two seasons, back-to-back.
Prime Video’s God Of War Is Its Main One Piece Rival For 2027
On its own terms, it already feels as though God of War cannot fail. Having taken the bold decision to skip the Greek mythology part of the video game franchise’s lore entirely, Moore and his writing team are set to hurl us headlong into the archetypal hero’s journey, as we follow Kratos and his son Atreus on their quest to reach the highest peak of the nine realms.
With One Piece season 3 due for release in 2027, it looks as though God of War will be the Netflix behemoth’s principal fantasy adventure rival on major streaming platforms next year. Tonally, the two franchises differ considerably from one other, but their contrasting qualities only add to the sense that their rivalry is shaping up to be one of TV’s biggest viewership battles for the remainder of the 2020s.
Both their live-action streaming adaptations ultimately rely on spectacular world-building being rendered in a style true to the roots of their stories, as well as casting choices which elevate characters already beloved in other media. Prime Video’s God of War has faced concerns from longtime video gamers that the show won’t live up to its iconic source material.
Yet, the same was true for Netflix’s One Piece, before the worries of anime and manga fans were washed away by the very first Straw Hat voyage in live action. God of War has the potential to be a similar streaming triumph. With filming of its first two seasons due to wrap in April 2027, there’s every chance we’ll see it debut on Prime Video before the end of next year.
God Of War Confirms Prime Video’s Age Of Video Game Adaptations
Amazon MGM Studios is developing a reputation among gaming fans for its bold and innovative live-action adaptations of major gaming franchises. First, there was Fallout, which is already among the biggest and most successful TV shows on the planet, just two years on from its initial release. Later in 2024, there was Prime Video’s 15-episode anthology series Secret Level, which somehow successfully merged more than a dozen gaming franchise adaptations into a single season of television.

Now, God of War has solidified Amazon’s strategy of turning celebrated game series into big-budget TV shows. If, as expected, it turns out to be a success, the show will serve as official confirmation that Prime Video is now in the midst of a golden era of video game adaptations. As well as Netflix has done with One Piece, it doesn’t have a broader strategy for success this consistent.
