Denzel Washington’s 122-Minute Thriller Masterpiece Is Officially Streaming For Free

[

Denzel Washington’s absolute greatest performance is a thriller masterpiece that’s available to stream right now. Denzel Washington has built one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed careers, moving effortlessly between gripping dramas, high-octane action movies and Shakespearean adaptations. With a truly illustrious career, the two-time Academy Award winner has repeatedly demonstrated why he remains one of the industry’s most compelling leading men.

Some of Denzel Washington’s most memorable performances come when he steps outside the familiar territory of the heroic protagonist. The actor has a particular talent for playing characters whose charm conceals something considerably more sinister, making audiences question just how much they should trust the person standing at the center of the story.

His collaborations with director Antoine Fuqua have produced some particularly memorable results, including The Equalizer franchise that has kept audiences entertained across multiple installments. Yet their most celebrated collaboration remains a much grittier affair, one that gave Washington an opportunity to embrace his darker instincts while sharing the screen with another exceptional actor.

Released in 2001, Training Day is a crime thriller that boasts terrific performances, an increasingly nerve-racking story and an uncompromising portrayal of police corruption. It barely gives audiences time to catch their breath, and its central performances remain just as compelling more than two decades later. Training Day is available to watch for free on Tubi from November 1, 2026, making it a particularly tempting addition to the free streaming catalog.

Denzel Washington & Ethan Hawke Are Terrific Together In Training Day

Antoine Fuqua’s Training Day benefits enormously from the chemistry between Washington and Ethan Hawke, whose contrasting performances provide its dramatic backbone. Washington plays Alonzo Harris, a veteran Los Angeles Police Department narcotics detective who takes rookie officer Jake Hoyt (Hawke) under his wing for an eventful first day with the department’s narcotics division.

Alonzo initially presents himself as an experienced officer who understands the realities of working in dangerous neighborhoods. However, Jake quickly discovers that his new partner’s methods are considerably more questionable than he anticipated. Alonzo operates according to his own rules, manipulating situations, intimidating suspects and demonstrating an alarming willingness to disregard the law.

Washington is magnificent as Alonzo, bringing an extraordinary amount of charisma to a character who is fundamentally terrifying. His confidence makes it easy to understand why people follow him, even when his behavior becomes increasingly indefensible. The actor also clearly relishes the opportunity to abandon his traditionally heroic screen persona, delivering a performance packed with swagger, menace and unpredictable energy.

Hawke is an equally important part of the equation. His Jake begins as an ambitious but relatively inexperienced police officer, and his growing discomfort provides the audience with an increasingly desperate perspective on Alonzo’s behavior. Rather than simply playing the straight man opposite Washington, Hawke gives Jake a convincing progression as his character begins to recognize the danger surrounding him.

Training Day Remains An Essential Denzel Washington Thriller

There is a reason Training Day continues to feature prominently in conversations about Washington’s finest performances. Alonzo Harris is a character who genuinely believes his methods are justified, even when his actions become increasingly criminal. That conviction makes him considerably more interesting than a straightforward cinematic villain.

Screenwriter David Ayer builds the story around a single day in Los Angeles, allowing the relationship between Alonzo and Jake to deteriorate as the rookie discovers what his new partner is really doing. The escalating tension comes from Jake’s increasingly difficult decision whether to follow the instructions of an experienced detective or trust his own moral instincts.

Snoop Dogg’s appearance as wheelchair-using drug dealer Blue, Dr. Dre’s role as Paul and Macy Gray’s appearance as Sandman’s wife give Training Day a particularly distinctive supporting ensemble. Scott Glenn and Tom Berenger also help establish the wider network of relationships surrounding Alonzo.

Training Day was not without its critics, particularly regarding its increasingly exaggerated violence and final act. Nevertheless, Training Day remains a fascinating examination of authority, corruption and the seductive nature of power.

Is Training Day’s Prequel Still Happening?

Warner Bros. first announced plans for a Training Day prequel in October 2019, with the proposed movie focusing on a younger version of Alonzo Harris. Titled Training Day: Day of the Riot, the project would take place in late April 1992, two days before the verdict in the Rodney King trial. The acquittal of the four Los Angeles police officers charged in connection with King’s beating sparked the infamous Los Angeles riots, providing a historically significant backdrop for the story.

The project was subsequently expected to begin production in California in February 2022, although that proposed filming date came and went without the movie entering production. Antoine Fuqua later provided a more encouraging update in 2023, confirming that the project remained in development and that the filmmakers were still working on the script while looking for another director. Fuqua also made clear that he did not intend to direct it himself.

In March 2025, Fuqua again confirmed that the prequel was still being developed, although the screenplay remained under revision. He was not attached to direct, meaning the project still had considerable creative hurdles to overcome.

There is certainly an interesting story to explore in Alonzo’s earlier years, particularly given the historical circumstances surrounding the 1992 Los Angeles riots. However, Washington’s performance established such a distinctive screen presence that casting a younger actor will be a considerable challenge.

The prequel will need to give audiences a convincing portrayal of how Alonzo became the charismatic, ruthless detective they encountered in the original film. For now, Day of the Riot remains a development project rather than an imminent release.

Training Day Was The Last Time Washington Hit A Career Highpoint

Washington has continued to deliver acclaimed performances since Training Day, but his portrayal of Alonzo Harris is one of the defining achievements of his career. It also represents the last time he won an Academy Award for acting, despite receiving several nominations in the years that followed.

The actor previously won Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Private Silas Trip in Edward Zwick’s Glory (1989). However, his Best Actor win for Training Day was a particularly significant achievement, as he became only the second Black actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, following Sidney Poitier.

Washington has hardly disappeared from the Academy’s radar since then. He received Best Actor nominations for Flight (2012), his adaptation of Fences (2016), Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) and The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021). He also received a Best Picture nomination as a producer of Fences.

More recently, Washington delivered another memorable performance as Macrinus in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II (2024), earning nominations at several major awards ceremonies, although he missed out on an Oscar nomination. His subsequent work demonstrates that there is considerably more to his career than one extraordinary crime thriller. However, his performance in Training Day.
